2023 Season | Series #30 | Guardians @ Rangers | July 14-16, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Believe it or not, Cleveland is a solid MLB best in this stat this year. 22 inherited runners have scored.
The Yankees have allowed 60. (Well, more than that after today.)
Yeah... It was so sad to see the NYY pen getting torched... in fact.. a small tear formed in the corner of my eye over the sadness.. (is it layed on thick enough yet????)....

I heard Bryan Shaw is available, can someone check in on him?
I still think we are lacking a veteran arm out there... We lost our bullpen coach and we lost our only veteran arm out there and our next experienced guy went to the minors already in Karinchak...

It's honestly not an issue with the talent side, I would 100% bet its way more the mental side probably...

Hentges is especially disappointing after the way he finished last season. And Karinchak pitched himself right back to the minor leagues. Clase has already blown more saves before the break than he did all last year.
Karinchak was going to be in trouble, when they cracked down on the sticky-icky and time to throw a pitch. His effectiveness DEPENDED on him taking forever to get shit from his hair and deliver the ball.

I know diagnosing people with things online is a no-no and I could be wrong anyways, but I’m fairly confident Karinchak has OCD.

He might ALSO have been using sticky stuff. I also think he has compulsions based on the face that he repetitively touches the bag, and his hair, the ball, etc in the same pattern every time. Patterns like that are a dead giveaway for OCD.

If I’m right about that, this series of repetitive body/ball/bag touching is a ritual that his mind has irrationally connected to success in pitching. And if he doesn’t complete his rituals, then he “believes” he can’t be successful as a pitcher.

Being rushed with OCD adds additional anxiety on top of the anxiety that feeds the OCD in the first place.

If this is what it is, he will need to get treated, so that he can stop doing the compulsions altogether so that he doesn’t connect them to success. Instead, he’d need to just believe he can be successful and battle the urge to do the rituals. They cost him time and affect the count.

If this is what it is, then someone should address it with him or he’s going to crash out of the league. That disorder destroys people’s careers and lives, particularly if efficiency is important.

Again, I could he wrong and he could just enjoy touching himself for other reasons. Tourettes, adhd, other nervous habits might be in play. But I just feel pretty confident about it. And if it’s true, someone should address it.

Yes.. that is correct.. The Guardians pen has been very very good at stranding inherited runners..

I'm thinking he self-pollutes.

WPA is the most important stat for a bullpen, because it takes into account how and when they were used, and if there were runners on base, etc. The Guardians are going to be at effectively 0 WPA after today (0.69-.0.64 = 0.05)

Last year they had 10.41. So yeah we're on pace for the bullpen to be about 10 games less productive than last year...
I wonder if the balanced schedule and banning the shift have anything to do with that? Maybe it's just one of those years where the same BP was great the season prior and is struggling to put it all together this year?

It's not just the BP. This team just can't get synced. One day the SP is great and the BP blows it. Another day the offense is great and the starter blows it. Today the offense and starter were great and the BP lost it. There has been too many times this season where the starter and BP were great and the offense couldn't score more than 2 runs.

Or yesterday, when the pitching was great but we couldn't even score 2 runs. (Actually 1)

The bullpen gave up 14 earned runs in 8 innings in this series. They came in leading the majors in bullpen ERA while the Rangers were 25th. I figured if it came down to the bullpens we can win. Not so much.

The Rangers bullpen gave up 2 earned runs in 10.2 innings. The Guardians' bullpen blew two leads; a 5-2 lead after 7 innings and a 4-3 lead after six innings.

The Guardians could have won this series 2-1 with a little help from the bullpen.
That is a bit of a homer viewer. The Rangers have a very good offense so holding them down is much harder than playing teams the likes Of Kansas City or the White Sox in a close game . It’s hard to say you should have won a game on Friday when you lost 12 to 4. I wonder how much the bullpen numbers are inflated due to playing in the weakest division in modern professional sports? Not saying the bullpen is horrible but I don’t think the numbers would be nearly as good if they were playing in the AL East.

The Rangers are the superior team this year , and honestly the results are accurate based on how each team performed.

But now that I think about it you are right about Sunday . But again good teams with good lineups are harder to hold leads against .
