2024 Guardians Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Our pitchers have been overperforming long before Hedges came here and overperformed when he wasn't here last season. Not quite sure what you're trying to get at there.

Having ex-catchers all over the coaching staff only enhances the reasoning behind replacing Hedges.
I don’t understand why you’re hung up on Hedges. He catches one game a week, barring anything weird happening with the schedule. They’re 5-1 in games he’s started.

I’m pretty sure the FO knew the makeup of the staff before they brought him in. The way he prepares day to day, communicates with pitchers and teammates, etc. are probably all important things that they hope rub off on Bo as he continues to develop. And coaches can’t replicate those things like a teammate can.

Feel free to criticize one of the most successful FO’s in all of sports, but this one seems like you’re feigning anger for the sake of it.

Take it with a grain of salt. He wants to get rid of Kwan also.

I am on board with Trading Loleano though. Would prefer to see those right handed ABs and OF reps go to Arias and Fry.

First off it's just a conversation that started with how some of these younger players/prospects are going to get opportunity. Secondly, I'm not "hung up" on Hedges. His -32 OPS+ and -.2 WAR are simply replaceable. In fact, I would suggest replacing him would make this team even better.

The idea of Hedges "rubbing off" is questionable, but I respect your opinion on the matter even though I don't share it. Like I said, if those intagibles are that important then they should consider locking him up longterm.

There is no anger discussing this although you seem a bit disturbed doing so.

Good Lord! I'm not going to bother re-explaining myself. If you want to speak with any integrity you can go back and reread all my posts and then say something accurately.

You made five consecutive posts involving Hedges leading up to mine. Sorry for the confusion.

His intangibles must be important. Otherwise, Fry or someone else would be getting those starts behind the dish. I don’t really see how that’s a point of debate. You don’t need a guy like Hedges locked up long term for his impact to be long term. Perhaps one season of his work ethic and the way he operates within a clubhouse is sufficient for Bo to see how things should be done. The organization isn’t treating him like he’s some Udonis Haslam.

He has 21 ABs in 20 games. Which younger prospect is he standing in the way of, exactly?

You can't have more than 13 pitchers by rule so if Hedges were released or traded you would have to replace him with a position player. The problem is, we already have too many position players who aren't getting enough at-bats.

How about replacing him with an outfielder, say Johnathan Rodriguez? Now we have Kwan, Freeman, Florial, Laureano, Brennan, and Rodriguez in the outfield. How do we find at-bats for six outfielders? Fry and Arias can play OF as well - Fry started in left the other day.

How about another infielder? We already have Jose, Arias, Rocchio, Gimenez, and Josh Naylor. Arias and Fry can play first base. If we brought up somebody like Brito, where would he get playing time?

Anybody advocating getting rid of Hedges should identify who would replace him and explain how that makes the team better.

I love the confidence and aggressiveness I'm seeing from Tim Herrin this year. Last year he looked like a deer in the headlights. He was up and down between here and Columbus and he was pitching like one bad pitch gets him another ride south.

This year is night and day. Yesterday he blew through three A's in 13 pitches. He struck out the last guy on three pitches with the last one being a swing-and-miss fastball, then practically strutted off the mound.

So far his line is 10.2 innings, 2 hits, 1 earned run, 5 walks, and 11 K's. Batters are hitting .063 off him.

I think the injury to Sam Hentges really helped Herrin because now Herrin is getting those innings and he is making the most of it. So far he looks like a totally different pitcher who is now confident that his stuff plays up here and he doesn't have to nibble.

Yeah that's my hesitation on moving on from Loleano. Who fills the roster spot. I'm ok with Arias and Fry taking the ABs and OF reps. But we need another right handed bench bat to replace him. Rodriguez maybe. But it'll be difficult to find him ABs. Brito? Idk what kind of defensive versatility he has. 2B,3B maybe? Schneemann would be nice for the utility role, but he's just another lefty...
So idk. Let the roster ride until summer.

See I feel moving Laureano we then are allowing Fry, Arias etc to get more ABs... Then I'd rather have an older player like Scheeman, who has positional flexibility as the 13th man in a sense...

We lose a RH bat, but I can live with that since Josh Naylor, Kwan and Gimenez have all shown they can hit lefties...

I am really on board with moving Laureano now that I see he is -3 OAA. Not hitting and not playing defense. Don't think we can move him at this point, but I don't want to see him in the lineup unless it is a lefty he owns.

Hot take alert.
Bring Straw back up to replace Loleano. Vogt has shown each game matters. He has pinch hit late, used defensive subs. Hasn't really pinch ran yet that I can recall... but the majority of our hitters have decent speed with makes a pinch runner not necessar.

We're missing a late game runner/defensive sub. Straw didn't run too much last year. But I'm wondering if that was a Tito decision and not a Straw decision. Vogts team is very greedy on the base paths. Straws speed could excell in a PR/D sub assignment.

I'm not even debating your logic here. I'll only ask if the roster spot is valuable? Judging by the use of Hedges it is not. That or his value is intangible and I'd prefer tangible value. That's the discussion/debate, not if the Guardians' staff thinks he's valuable.

I've explained this already. I see value in Fry getting those 24 or so games behind the dish.

Actually I made one post and there were several responses to that. I've simply responded back.

Wait, you mean Herrin getting actual game experience has helped him? Sorry for the sarcasm, it stems from the idea of Fry getting Hedges playing time. I digress.

This BP is going to be nothing short of nasty. Clase, Smith, Hentges, Herrin, Walters, Aleman, Sandlin and whoever else sticks.
