23 Offseason - Other Team Needs and Actions

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Stating that Amed(an average player) gives us the best chance to win is nothing but a best guess when considering the worst case scenario with the other options. Funny how someone can suggest that ATL will have no interest in him because they are committed to their prospect yet Amed "gives us the best chance to win".

Stating that keeping Amed is on the same level as acquiring Bell and Zunino is laughable.

Amed is an average player.
" That's a good one, Keaton."

Amed is a $7.8M dingleberry that just won't let go. He doesn't improve our chances of winning and he's in the way. He has no versatility and he isn't good defensively. He's fast, but he doesn't get on base very well. He has modest power at best. He hit 11 HR in 637 AB for God's sake. He only hit 26 2B in those same 637 AB.
You had me at dingleberry. :celb (13):

Actually he’s an average offensive player and a below average defensive player. Hate to break it to you son, but dad has to keep it real.

I'm still just trying to figure out what the link is between Amed Rosario and overpriced champagne.

I imagine I am MUCH older than you,,,, and, finishing third in the league in base hits ain't average. Oh, I know, you have 47 analytics that prove me wrong.

Well he should have that many hits since he had well over 600 AB. He also ranked 238th in walks with those 637 AB and since he doesn't hit anything but singles most of the time that's pretty bad. He was behind all of Straw, Ramirez, Gimenez and Kwan in SB too. You have my condolences when your beloved Amed departs from Cleveland. Enjoy him however long he may be in Cleveland for the 23 season, but don't sulk too long though because we'll be better when he's gone.

He's good at getting hits.

Hits are just one component of offensive production.

If he was third in the league in hits with an average walk rate, he'd be very productive.

But he isn't--he's almost dead last on terms of walk rate.

So, even though he has hits, it doesn't mean he gets on base at a particularly great frequency.

But if he turns that on base percentage into some nice power, he'd again be a strong producer.

Except, again, he doesn't hit for power--so his offensive production turns out to be average.

Pair that with below average defense, the last year of his contract, and the crop of young talented players behind him and it's a recipe for replacement--not retainment.

I wouldnt call defense, power and on base percentage analytics. Those factors have been around for decades so even old men like us can understand why he is an average player despite being in the top 3 in one major metric.

Basically Ahmed is a butter face....you know nice body, butter face.

I guess Earl Weaver with his index cards were analytics? I mean that seriously?

All joking aside, I get why you like Amed. I even stated last season at some point how I thoroughly appreciated his hustle and attitude. He seems like a genuinely good dude. I wish he could play CF some, but unfortunately he cannot and he will not be a longterm answer at SS for Cleveland.

I agree with all that you said.

Folks talk about being an average baseball player is a bad thing.

It's not, and average is not easily attained...anything but a given for a prospect.

Breaking down team fWAR by position, last season (1-5 above average, 6-10 average, 11-15 below average) we were...

Above average at 2B, 3B, and LF.

Average at 1B and SS.

Below average at C, RF, CF, and DH.

SS was, and is, not a problem.

The biggest chance for improvement would be to raise the last four to average.

CF should be solved with a positive regression to the norm.

DH has been solved on paper. C may be solved, depending on Zuninos health. RF has two candidates in Oscar and Brennan.

The winning formula is not to have an elite player at every position. It is to have no position below average.

Which is why a super sub like Casey Blake is so valuable. Blake could be plugged in just about anywhere, and turn below average into immediate average.

I see one player on our roster who might be able to do that, although I have big doubts that he can hit enough, and that is Arias. It was my hope for Miller, too...but Miller never got a shot at playing OF, and didn't hit anyway.

Arias could probably play every position adequately, except C and CF. If he could be an average bat, he could upgrade just about any below average position we had.

If I was Tito and the FO, Arias would get work in RF, as a back up plan for a RH corner bat behind Oscar. Its a position he has never played, but he's got the arm for it.

Under the current circumstances in Cleveland, there is no logical reason to settle for "average" if you don't have to. Are we trying to build the best team possible or not, and clearly Amed is a very short term member.

Arias is a potential GG SS with a big bat. The only things keeping him in a possible utility role is the fact that nobody else can currently fill that role and being an unproven ML player himself. He has shown signs of being able to succeed as a ML hitter, but they are very small samples. The talent is blatant, but there have been plenty of talented players struggle. They need to find out what he can do and letting him settle in at 1 position would be optimal. It's really too bad that Amed has no defensive versatility because he could be a better than average utility player. Wish in one hand..............
