There was also a pretty significant shift in offensive strategy throughout the NBA during the SVG years in Detroit.Actually, Drummond was given a huge contract by Stan Van Gundy, who loved Drummond. SVG designed his entire offense around Reggie Jackson running the pick-n-roll with Drummond. It was pretty effective too. Drummond had his two best years as an All Star with SVG coaching and Jackson as PG.
But then Jackson kept getting chronically injured and missing half the seasons. Finally, someone in the front office, probably Tom Gores himself, freaked out and traded for Griffin, in a desperate move. After that is was over. Griffin ate up 33% of the payroll, and was injured all the time along with Jackson. And Griffin and Drummond had terrible chemistry together.
So after SVG was fired, Drummond fell out of favor in Detroit, and was traded to the Cavs for a bag of basketballs. Now the Pistons are the worst team in the league.
During the 2015-16 season (SVG's 2nd season and Drummond's first AS appearance), the Pistons had an Offensive Rating of 106.1, which was good enough for 13th in the league.
The next season, the Pistons had a 106.0 Offensive Rating, now just 24th in the league. Last year, 106.1 would have been the second-worst in the league.
Still, I would love it if the Cavs just used him as a PnR guy with Garland and Sexton. I hope that's what they do when they get healthy. The less Drummond is used as an initiator and playmaker, the better. He can have an All-NBA type impact if they can just make him a net neutral offensive player.
