Andre Drummond - LeBron's Robin

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I’ve come around on Drummond. He’s a REALLY valuable piece when he has his head on straight. He can create on offense and defend at a level that other guys at his position can’t do.

With him it’s all about picking the right spots.

Amen.

Cavs should have a Kangaroo Court for dumb ass plays.

The "when he has his head on straight" part is the rub, and it's never going to change. Never. This is who he is, was, and forever will be. Every game he plays, there will be a handful of moments where he dribbles too much, tries to play like a guard, gets too soft and cute inside around the basket, fails to give up the ball to anybody but his preferred teammates, sets lazy screens, throws lazy passes, and has immature moments of pouting. He will have very effective moments thoroughly outclassing his opponent too, but he will always represent the monkey paw wish of good plus bad. The question is whether you can accept both. I really can't. It's too maddening moment to moment.

I know what you mean. I was thinking there is a problem and it is that you can't have a guy making those kind of mistakes on a championship team. He raises your floor a lot, but he maybe blew the game at the end there after keeping the Cavs in it.

They said the same about KPJ...til they realized his head isn't on straight enough to benefit the team.

Drummond trying to be Giannis helped the Lakers tonight. Especially at the end with turnovers and bad shots. I've called him the Russ Westbrook of centers. Just look at the boxscores and he'll impress. Watch the games, especially in crunch time, and you'll want to throw things.

He's maddening for sure. For ALL the good he does, he destroys the offense when he gets in hero mode. I have no idea how to coach NBA players, but man does he need to take a breather ANY time he dribble drives into traffic from the three point line and does a 360 hook shot into the stands.

I think he's gone before the trade deadline and, long term, its probably necessary. But I think we will miss him more than many want to admit. He is the only inside scorer on the roster and is a very good defender. But the biggest thing is he is a rebounding machine. Our current starters are small at every position 1-4. Who is going to clean the boards? Garland, Sexton, Okoro, Nance, Windler, Cedi, Prince? None of those guys screams "rebounder". Allen is a good rebounder, but he isn't Drummond and he isn't going to be able to cover the rebounding deficiencies of the rest of the team.

I don't know what games you're watching but Drummond isn't a very good inside scorer. Allen has shown more inside scoring than him.

Nobody rarely talks about his defense because it's legit most of the time.

He's a rebounding machine because most of the rebounds he gets are from him missing shots on the offensive side...

Allen is 22 years old and almost grabbing double digit rebounds a game on limited minutes. Can you imagine, the amount of rebounds he will get once Drummond is out of the picture.

Finally, Cedi,Nance,Prince and Windler are very capable rebounders. You make it sound like Drummond is Dennis Rodman when he's not.

Don't hear me wrong. I see him to rebounding like what Harden has been to scoring - amazingly gifted, but I'm not sure what the whole package gives you. I think we need to move on from Drummond unless we can get him for a lot less than I think we can. But there is a reason we are not going to be able to sign him cheap. He won't get the $30M he wants, but if Adams, Gobert, Vucevic and Horford are worth north of $25M then surely Drummond is in 20+ range.

That said - I like Allen long term and I think he fits our team better, but he is not a better scorer than Drummond. He rarely misses because he rarely shoots - the 7 shots a game he's taken with us are the highest in his career. I'd prefer Drummond shoot less and, more importantly, show better shot selection. But one of the reasons he shoots more is he can put the ball in the hole. And if you watch the way other teams defend him vs Allen, you'll see they know that also. And, by any measure, Drummond is an incredible rebounder: His career average is higher than Rodman and Rodman did nothing else. Rodman in his prime is the best rebounder I've ever seen, but you literally have to go back to Rodman's prime years to find someone putting up better numbers than Drummond. He has led the league for the last 3 years and is leading it again this year. He is the only player in the modern era to be in the top 10 in average rebounds per game. Like it or not, he is covering a lot of our weaknesses on the boards. We are already a mediocre rebounding team. We will be less than that when he leaves.

Again, I'm on record for keeping Allen and shipping Drummond. But saying that, it's clear that Drummond is the more productive player of the two right now.

Yeah it will cause the team to take at least a half step back.

Drummond is about as polarizing as a player I've seen on this board. Only other guy who really comes to my immediate mind is Dion Waiters as far as the variance of opinion on RCF.

What's weird about Drummond is that he can play excellently and be a main reason the team is willing but he is capable on a moments notice, to make an extremely costly decision or decisions that completely change momentum of the game.

So much of being a great team is based on trust. And as talented as Drummond is... you wonder what level of trust coaches and teammates would have in a guy who is that much of a wild card.

A lot of those rebounds are “empty” aka Drummond is the only one under the rim. But a lot are contested grown ass man effort rebounds. Offensively efficient then unbridled chucking 30 seconds later.

he really is the Drumundrum.

Drummond is right now the more productive player and Allen's upside is higher. its hard to see a productive player let walk or traded for very little while betting on potential.

Drummond is the same person he was in Detroit. Of course, teams are going to respect him more than Allen because he's been in the league longer than Allen.

Drummond shouldn't be having more shot attempts than Cedi and Garland on the team. Especially, when he commits the most turnovers on the team.

Drummond should be getting most of his points on dunks and layups. Even, then he doesn't do that well.

I can't wait til he's off this team because he rather pad his stats than play team basketball. Whoever signs him is going to have a major headache dealing with his nonsense.
