I'd almost recommend on YouTube going to TeamFourStar and watching Dragon Ball Z Abridged. Short and sweet early on which is good because it really picks up when Vegeta and Nappa come to Earth.
As someone who grew up watching the show DBZA really captures the spirit but pokes fun at the slog it can be. Just took them a couple of episodes to start nailing down the humor. The whole series is probably 70 episodes (some are broken up).
Also Dragon Ball is far superior to Z as a series, in my opinion. Z has the spectacle but Dragon Ball has the best choreographed fights and heart.
DBZA is great. Miss that era of youtube for sure
Still powering through all of the Dragon Ball animes. Just started the Android saga of DBZ. Just had the episode where Goku has the heart virus whole fighting Androids 19 and 20.
The only seasons I've enjoyed were seasons like 3 and onward of Dragon Ball. Haven't really enjoyed any of DBZ so far other than the brief appearance of Future Trunks and that whole thing.
Does it get better?
Also agree on Dragon Ball being better than Z for sure. So much more fun when its a martial arts anime, there aren't a billion aliens, and one out of three episodes is two guys yelling and slowly becoming more blond and muscular.
Z has some good stuff. Frieza arc is awesome. I unironically like the Gohan in high school filler arc. But you can tell when Toriyama stopped putting as much effort into it. Frieza arc was supposed to be the end of the series with Goku passing as the only SSJ, but the series was too popular so we got Cell and Buu arcs.
Dragonball and DBZ are both a bit tropey, but they are the original for a lot of these things like fighting tournaments and the aforementioned powering up for 3 episodes.
I would skip GT entirely. It has been uncanonized in several places and is bad. Super has some good stuff, tho I have read more than I have watched of it.
