Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Laid an egg but I'm confident he can and will do better. The throws he was missing were the same ones he connected on in the last three games.

Next week would be a really good time for Baker to have his “Defense vs Bears in week 3” bounce back game.

He's obviously capable of being much better than this, so the question is why he's looked like dog shit the past two games. Is it the shoulder? A shakier OL and more sacks? Combination of those things? It isn't the scheme (overall), it isn't the talent.

My purely speculative armchair psychiatrist opinion is that he's desperate to not get hit. It's like 2019. He's bailing on the pocket, rushing throws or just not putting all his attention into making the right throw mechanically. Maybe the shoulder injury is worse than we think and it's affecting this, too. So he's got, as others here have said, the yips.

I'd also be interested to see someone break down the impact of Landry's absence. Today in particular it just seemed like Baker wasn't comfortable with or even looking much to the slot. This is just my memory take from the game, but his throws were either sideline or down the numbers.

Took him 6+ weeks to get right last year. If he does the same this year we’re good.
