Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I see a Teddy KGB reference, I like it.

I'm really frustrated with the type of mistakes we're seeing from Baker still, you'd hope he would have grown out of it by now. He obviously doesn't give you the escapability and play making ability that the others elite young QBs do, so he needs to be money in structure. Missing or not trusting himself to get it to open receivers, scattershot accuracy, holding onto the ball too long... the team is absolutely good enough to win it all, but Baker as he's played for most of this year just hasn't been.

He'll get the year to prove himself, but if he has more performances like this I could absolutely see the team moving on and being aggressive hunting for a QB upgrade. I wish he'd just be good enough to prove he's the guy, but man these games have been bad.

Mistakes would be throwing interceptions. This could be that the shoulder is bugging him. Or maybe fear of interceptions is bugging him. Or some combination of those two things.

Baker tends to play bad when he doesn't have confidence in his o-line. Wills constantly getting hurt and we have to put a 3rd or 4th stringer at left tackle on his blind side isn't going to help things. Hubbard being hurt and can't be that guy who fills in just compounds the problem.

Baker and OBJ still don't have any chemistry with each other, being year 3 playing with each other I just don't feel like it's every going to happen. Baker seems to want to get OBJ his touches over making the right play alot of the times. Baker also just tends to orchestrates the offense way better without OBJ. It might be another one of those things that gets into his head and creates poor play. Without OBJ he doesn't really have to worry about who he needs to feed the ball to vs just making the right play.

The footwork just wasn’t there today.

The timing in his steps that I pointed out a few weeks ago, he’s off and throwing completely out of rhythm.

If I’m Stefanski, you get him rolling early next week against that Chargers defense. Early, high efficiency throws and use the play action often to get his timing rolling.

He looks tiny out there. Awful game. But let’s see how he looks after the next four.

While it’s correctable, I can’t be the only one disconcerted by the fact that he still struggles with technique in year 4, right?

I thought we were finally over the "blame OBJ" shit, then I see this...
Not really blaming OBJ. Just pointing out the fact he could have made adjustments to those 2 balls. They just need to get in sync with each other better.

His footwork was torn down to ground 0 under Stefanski and Van Pelt.

He's had to unlearn and re-learn a lot in that regard. VP called it out almost the second that camp opened last season.

Not defending his play today, but just wanted to point that out.

Does he need time off for the shoulder?

Fair or not, I tend to irrationally watch Baker and just think “we seriously paying this guy $35 million a year?”.
