Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
While it’s correctable, I can’t be the only one disconcerted by the fact that he still struggles with technique in year 4, right?

This is key - Baker isn't some rookie or saddled an incompetent coaching staff or with a shitty supporting cast.

He is surrounded by Pro Bowl talent, 2nd year in the same system - and these are the results. Inconsistent at best.

I can't help but imagine Joe Burrow surrounded by our talent...

A lot of really good QBs have horrible games but they often still find ways to make big plays and throws when it matters most. That was always the part that was so frustrating about other top QBs who would inevitably beat the Browns. Those guys could play like shit and then lead the team on a couple big drives in the 4th quarter.

Baker just seemed completely unable to make a winning play today. That final miss with OBJ, he just seemed exasperated.

Pretty sure he connected with OBJ to help get us in field goal range late in the 4th? He missed a bunch of throws to ice the game but he's not completely incapable of making a winning play on an off day.

Mistakes would be throwing interceptions. This could be that the shoulder is bugging him. Or maybe fear of interceptions is bugging him. Or some combination of those two things.

When you throw a football, you use your off hand for balance and to help.with rotation of the shoulders. Depending on how that left shoulder is feeling, it could definitely be impacting his accuracy

I'm not really sure why people put so much weight on a week 4 game in Minnesota. Baker has consistently been above average since Stefanski has taken over.

He was ass today but up until this game he hasn't been missing guys who are open. There's plenty of time for him to get back to normal as long as this isn't injury related.

Ya know I’m with you that the shoulder is absolutely a problem… but I’m hoping that it also put him out of rhythm enough to completely space on a wide open Felton on a third down play designed for him. Like… if you want to gut out an injury, you don’t get an excuse for every play in the game. And to @Sebastian ’s point.. if we’re going to attribute a day like today to the shoulder, you have to consider sitting him down to heal. I feel strongly that Keenum has us cruising to a comfortable win.

And this is not a post meant to disparage Baker and call for controversy. Games 1.5 is who I believe Baker to be. I just want the team and Baker to be honest with themselves in the near term if he’s hurting.

Not really blaming OBJ. Just pointing out the fact he could have made adjustments to those 2 balls. They just need to get in sync with each other better.

I feel like OBJ and Baker just aren't a fit for each other. Baker has played better when OBJ isn't on the field. Baker tends to be determine to get the ball to OBJ if he is the intended target with whatever play is called. I think he wants to keep OBJ happy and it clouds his judgement.

If we can get something for OBJ I wouldn't mind trading him. I think we have so many weapons on offense and it might be beneficial for both Baker and Stefanski to not have to worry about feeding OBJ.

This team is so much deeper with usable talent throughout the depth chart on offense now that I actually think it's easier for Stefanski to exploit teams with different formations and personnel when he doesn't have to worry about snaps and targets for a great talent like OBJ.

Hes trending downward (bad last week, absolutely shitty thus week) at a time when the schedule is getting more difficult. That's why people are concerned...

If Baker completes on easy downfield pass, we’re talking about a two TD win on the road and a 100+ yd 1 TD day for OBJ. Today has so little to do with OBJ/Baker “chemistry issues”… today was about Baker playing like shit and we should be determining if it was a one off bad day, a trend, or an injury. OBJ isn’t part of the discussion.

Give Case a full 60 minutes and then some of you would be calling for Mullens. :chuckle:

Baker was bad, but he could have been worse and cost us the game. He didn't. He played ~well enough~ for us to roll out of that mess with a W. We've got the Chargers and Cardinals coming up - let's see if he can have a bounce back performance.

Some of Bakers best games have come without OBJ. Today I feel like Baker held the ball longer than usual. Is that because OBJ gets in his ear that he got open just as he check down the ball or moved to another read.

Beyond missing OBJ a bunch of times, I don't think he looked off when throwing to everyone else.

I think certain players just don't mesh with each other and the style of how they play. I think that's the problem with Baker and OBJ. If OBJ gets traded he probably plays alot better somewhere and I think the Browns offense goes back to looking like they did in first two week of the season and the second half of last season.
