Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
People can hate on him all they want but Derek Carr’s EPA relative to his supporting roster talent is pretty impressive to me. PFF ranked the Raiders as I think the #26th best roster heading in to the season….and he’s still just chugging along producing.
We should probably add Burrow for absolute certain. A guy that’s playing much better than Baker but has an even worse reputation than Carr is Winston.

Forget the EPA, QBR, QB Rating, DVOA, PER, or whatever metric people are talking about. What do your eyes say? What do people see when they see Baker?

I’m telling you, when he threw that INT today the fucking energy sucked right out of teh stadium and for a brief second I think even the biggest Baker supporters felt like at that moment they were done with him. He had guys open on several plays today where he just refused to rip it and I’m sure the All-22 will better explain what I’m saying.

If people would simply watch the game they wouldn’t have to worry about where Baker ranks on any list because you’d know right away from watching him that he’s not close to where we need him to be.

Also the funny thing about Derek Carr is he was one of those QB’s. That a lot of people here scoffed at because they thought that we had our guy with Baker so a guy like Carr was beneath us. Now it looks like we have a bottom 10 QB that is disguising as a guy who can maybe be top 15 but he’s just not that guy.

The argument is more semantics to me, as the only reason you’d make an argument for Baker is he’s the youngest of them. So theoretically, he could get better and play longer, even though not much of what we seen indicates that to be very realistic.
Carr also struggles badly when under pressure so we are basically right back to where we are with baker. Baker has the arm talent to be a top 5 QB in this league. There’s no questioning that. We have seen him make insane throws. The problem is when he is uncomfortable with pressure his eyes go else where, creates bad mechanics, misses open guys etc. can that be fixed? Maybe we honestly don’t know. But I’d be willing to take my chances on that than try to replace him with average QB’s that have been in the league 10 years.

It isn't exactly secret that Wilson has been unhappy in SEA the past 18 months.

Things may not get better.

Just for funsies, what type of package do you throw at Seattle?

Or would you prefer to gamble on Watson? Or do you try to pry Carr away?

=======

As an aside, players like Baker can be very frustrating because they play well enough at times for folks to think "Ah, we're good!"

And then certain issues and shortcomings don't get remedied, or the learning curve is not overcome and then people think it may be time to move on.

And then this uncertainty goes on and opportunities for improvement come and go.

Which, unfortunately, is where the Browns may be at.

Does this Browns team play better with Stafford at the helm? Would he have been worth the price?

If Russell Wilson is truly available, I start at the Stafford package. Baker, 2 1’s and a conditional pick. I’m probably willing to do slightly more if it comes to it.

The chance to get a QB of his caliber, still in his prime (without a massage scandal) is incredibly rare. It almost never happens.

To me, he’s a similar producer who is far more reliable / consistent. So I think even if he’s a similar type of player, he gets more out of his talent through the evenness with which he performs. I also think that performance can raise to a good degree with the talent the Browns have.

He’s not this sexy slam dunk upgrade. I think he’s very unsexy but can simply execute as a veteran NFL QB should be able to. And with more talent and a better scheming coach, I think that would be a mix that would have great results.

With that said, what are these Russ trade packages? :chuckle:

Baker’s struggles aren’t just with his inability to perform under pressure. Baker Mayfield has some real physical limitations to his game and when things aren’t going well they become glaring weaknesses.

Seattle might as well light their first round picks on fire every year.

Baker, 2022 1st, 2023 2nd, 2023 3rd, 1 Defensive starter not names Myles, Ward, Delphic, JOK.

And give Russell Wilson a new contract.

I have this terrible feeling that they would want JOK

Give it a rest dude. They aren’t bringing anyone in this season to replace Baker and probably won’t next year either. Yes he probably did have guys open but when you have pressure in your face Bc Hudson is blocking air it doesn’t matter.

There was no pressure on his INT. He threw it from a clean pocket and threw it straight to the defender. Baker also lost 2 fumbles today. He also had multiple plays where he looked off completely wide open receivers from a clean pocket.

We’re not going to do this thing where we point out everything that wasn’t in pristine condition today and give Baker a pass for it.

At what point should we expect Baker to step up and overcome or is he only capable of performing when everything around him is perfect?
