Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm just saying that if he "proves himself", he's not going to settle for $35M.
In a day & age where its becoming increasingly clear that athletic and/or big QB's reign, I have a hard time giving that type of contract to a guy who is both small & unathletic. Baker certainly isn't in the league of some other QB's in the division, namely Lamar Jackson & Joe Burrow. Drew Brees had a heckuva career as a smallish QB, but I think we've all seen enough of Baker to know he isn't Drew Brees.

If Joe Burrow stays on this trajectory - and that's a big If -- he'll be pulling north of $50M/year by the time he's ready to sign. Jackson's deal is going to be for over $40M/year - likely close to Allen's 43M/year.

He's had a nightmarish season that is trending towards not even getting a chance to prove himself. If anything the season is cratering his leverage.

And this season may in turn serve as a cautionary tale against the risks of brazenly betting on himself for an incremental amount of money in such a physically abusive sport.

$35M is roughly 20% of the salary cap. Baker hasn't shown me that he's the kind of player that is worthy of that type of contract, which is why I say we wait. If he proves himself, fine. Once that deal is signed though there's no undoing it and, unless he proves himself worthy, it will be next to impossible to trade, without attaching draft picks.

I’m in this camp too but I also acknowledge that part of the calculus is certainty as well.

So if you think certainty at the QB position is worth 2.5% of your cap, that means his “market” value is more like market salary + $5 million. If you think it is 5%, it is twice that add on number.

There is a world where Baker is overpaid but it makes sense. $35 million seems reasonably in that ballpark to me. $40 million is where I get more uneasy.

I'm not sure that's necessarily good for the Browns. Because if it leaves them so far apart that he plays next season without an extension, that increases the risks for both sides.

That tweet also says “extension”, which I take to mean after his rookie deal is up. So the contract would start in 2023. There’s gonna be a huge cap spike for 2024, so 35m then will likely be a much smaller portion of the cap.

If Baker decides to "settle" for an AAV of $35 to $37 mil, I'm more than ok with that. If both sides decide to kick the can down the road to see how he does next season, I'm more than ok with that too.

If we do extend him at that number, I would think that his AAV would probably be very middle of the pack by the end of the contract, and significantly less than what the top tier franchise guys are pulling in.

Hard lesson learned unfortunately. I know he's hyper competitive but he needs to learn one of the biggest values to an NFL team at the QB position is availability and, in turn, reliability.

Be aggressive attacking the field, not attacking defenders after an errant throw.

Except he was still throwing blocks with that bad shoulder after the injury. Still scrambling and diving for extra yards too.

Why is everyone pretending like Baker is not 1 hit away from a career altering scenario?

If he goes out there and gets walloped Sunday it’s over. This whole tough guy schtick is growing old. Sit him down or he’s going to get out down by TJ Watt.

I just…….TJ Watt is going to hit him ok Sunday and we’re all gonna pretend like this wasn’t avoidable? I can’t believe this.

I think people trust the doctors and the team. Unless you know more about Baker's injury than they do?

Its not about trusting the doctors. Do you trust Baker to protect himself and play at a high level? I don’t.

We saw that even after the injury against the Texans he was still trying to throw blocks. He was still diving for extra yards. He has happy feet and bails the pocket in fear of getting hit.

He has shown how ten injury has effected him mentally. He can’t be trusted to go out there and protect himself because he’s too busy trying to show everyone how tough he is.

People are making excuses for his performance saying that he’s playing like that because he doesn’t want to get hit yet the dude was throwing blocks and diving for first downs. He’s been reckless and there’s no reason to believe that his playing style is gonna change in 1 game.

I agree with you.

Discretion is the better part of valor much of the time.

Take a SEAT, young Skywalker.
