...as has been stated several times in spring training and early in the season (get that man [franmill] a shovel !.. and now, just recently by _____________________.. Franmil Reyes as a 1B is a good back up plan.. Right handed.. power bat.. etc.. These two guys and the presence of Yu and Owen make that spot.. pretty well covered.. with Johnkensey on the way..

we'll see...

Biggest concern: He's hitting .175 against lefties.

Biggest plus: He's hitting .421 with two out and RISP (8-for-19). He also has seven walks and two HBP's in those situations, giving him an on-base percentage of .607 with two out and RISP.

He's also hitting .302 with RISP.
hasnt RISP gone the way of W-L for pitchers?

1. One exception to the rule kind of validates the OP's "almost always" caveat. It's almost as though you're agreeing with him.

2. For every Edwin, there are multiple Michael Bourns and Nick Swishers. Guys who generate offseason buzz ... and within a year or two, the FO is looking to dump their contracts.

3. The larger point here is that FA is a high-cost, low-return proposition. You're typically overspending for a player who is on the down side of his career. Now when said player is coming down from an awfully high mountaintop, and you're really only looking for a year or two out of him, and he could be the last piece to put you over the top -- i.e., Edwin -- it may be a worthwhile gamble. As a means for building the core of a team, it rarely works.
and you get a heck of a lot more lou marsons in bag of balls trades than legit ml players

Lou Marson was a top 100 prospect, traded along with three other top 100 prospects to us for Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco.

Four top 100 prospects, only one of them...Cookie...was ever worth squat in MLB.

A caution for those that are sure that our prospects are all gonna turn into productive players. In that trade, one of them did, which is the norm for top 100 prospects.

Marson though was never the same after that concussion...

Relievers are funny guys.

Because every outing is a small sample size, they can go from being in Cooperstown to the city rec league in a week....and vice versa.

If we judge relievers on merely the last two outings...or weeks...or months, we would insisted that Clase and Karinchak should be cut from the org at some point in the season, or we would be advocating for both of them to be signed to long term contracts.

We might even be doing both at the same time....lol.

There are so many questions surrounding Gose in particular.

The odds say that he will never be much of anything at all. His small sample size says that he could be Andrew Miller. Keeping him is worse than drawing to an inside straight. BUT, Andrew freaking Miller.

Then there is the question of what happens if we DFA him. It's not the same as if he was a Rule Five eligible prospect.

If a team picks him up on waivers, it means that they have to DFA somebody presently on their 40 man, and/or expose an additional prospect to R5. It also means in some cases, that they will have one less opening to use in the 5R.

There are gonna be lots of DFAs, many of whom will simply end up being reassigned to their parent org. Would Gose be one of the best waiver wire options available? Or is the chance better that we will be able to keep him via reassignment or a NRI?

I dunno, I'd have to get some odds from Vegas.

It's one of many tough decisions the FO has to make in five or six weeks.

How many plate appearances do you want to see from him then before making a determination one way or the other?
I agree with what Bimbo stated, but not using any numbers I want to see how they handle their initial exposure(I don't care if it's 100 or 400 AB) then I want to see how they respond the following season with a fresh start. I'll use Owen Miller as an example. His initial exposure pretty much sucked ass, but I firmly believe he's hitting much better and that his numbers next season(should he get the 2B gig) would be exponentially better. I don't think he'll hit .350 like he did in the minors, but I think .270-.280 is realistic. I think Bobby will respond in the same manner even if to a different degree.

I respectfully disagree with Bimbo and others when it comes to Bradley. His complete collapse at the plate since July should push this front office to look elsewhere for upgrades at 1B whether internally or externally. Plate appearances have to be earned not just handed out because it's someone's turn in the pecking order. Someone like Yu Chang has made adjustments after being demoted to Columbus and has now forced his way onto the roster next season. Bradley, meanwhile, has gone in the opposite direction.

He has a total of 278 AB across 2 seasons Kev. That's just not very many to judge any player on. Considering how BB hit in his minor league career I think it would be wise/astute to give him a full season's worth of AB. Chang doesn't have many AB either and while he's hitting better right now than BB, his OPS is still 51 points lower than Bradley's. Chang's OPS+ is 83 while Bradley's is 101. So considering the numbers that show production, who deserves "plate appearances" more? Whoever is the hotter hitter at the end of the season doesn't mean they've been the better hitter over the course of the entire season. Not every hitter is hot/cold at the same time.

I personally hate the idea of Chang or Miller playing 1B. Neither have the bat for it IMO.

He hit in the minors, but he also struck out an obscene amount down there too. Not every player is entitled to 600 plate appearances in the majors. Bradley isn't even playing every day over the past month, which is telling.

Bradley at the current moment is starting the season as the Guardians 1B. We have no internal options so unless we acquire a 1B from outside the organization, you will have to deal with it. Honestly I think he needs more time. I want to see how he adjusts in year two...

Allen worked his way into the rotation by being hot at the right time and putting up short term numbers that defied his pro career track record.

Chang has done the same thing this year in the second half.

Once bit, twice smart.

I dont think Chang has worked himself onto the roster yet. He is the oldest of ten MIFs competing for roster spots, and all, but Arias and Clement, have out performed him throughout their pro careers.

Seven of them are all but guaranteed roster spots.

***********

Bradley would probably be in the same spot, if we had three or four good looking 1B candidates, but we dont.

**********

We could work a trade to acquire one, but 1B is down the list of priorities.

Ask yourself this question....

Out of Bradley, Harold, Johnson, Zimmer and Mercado, which one would you rather see as a regular in 2022?
