With all this Redd and Allen talk, let's twirl around another name.

Sportsline.com reports: Bobby Simmons, L.A. Clippers: The former DePaul standout picked a great time to blossom, garnering most improved player honors during a contract year. Although he toiled in the relative obscurity that envelops the Clippers, he demonstrated a knack for knocking down the big shot, developed a killer midrange jumper to complement his scrappy play around the basket, and is long enough to provide defensive resistance. Of the threes available, he's the one certain starter, and he's in for a big payday, be it from the Clips or someone else.

Do we really need a pure shooter to complement LeBron? How about a Simmons type who can get open and hit his shots? Someone that has the long arms to evolve into a lockdown defender? Someone that doesn't have a big head that follows a max contract? Simmons would probably be a good option if we miss out on the max sweepstakes. Given that, we'll probably overpay a bit to pry him from LAC and still have room to sign up a decent FA to role play some more. Cliff Robinson, Donyell Marshall, perhaps even SAR.

From the looks of last year, a pure (or very consistent) shooter is needed to compliment LeBron. When James kicks the crosscourt pass to his teammate open in the corner or on the wing after attempting to drive and being stopped by the defense, a reliable dead-eye shooter must step up. One minor issue I have for Simmons is for a perimeter player, his handle is sometimes weak, which makes him an open shooter and a finisher (recepient of good passes). His slashing is only so-so. Seeing a guard with average slashing is like seeing a big man with only adequate post game. That's not the end of the world but you take note of it.

Simmons is a good choice provided other options are exhausted. He's going to follow the money, making overpaying inevitable.

Im still not sold on Simmons. I dont think hes the type of shooter we need. And hes a SF. Id rather keep lebron at sf, i think he plays much better there than at sg. But right now Bobby is starting to look like one of our top options with the big 4 sg's likely to resign with their teams.

Simmons should only be a possible backup option if the Cavs can't get any of the big 4 FA SG's. He isn't that close to the other 4 in terms of talent and skills. He's a good solid player who would help the Cavs though. I wouldn't over pay for him and only would be willing to pay a little over MLE level money.

i just wonder if he will ever have another season like last year. some players seem to emerge from nowhere in a contract year then pull a vanishing act after the get paid.

The position issue is of great relevence. He is a small forward like stated above, which means we have to relocate either LeBron or Simmons to shooting guard where they are likely to be exposed defensively. We all hope though that this isn't an issue as Michael Redd is our new signing.

I don't think Bobby Simmons is the SG that can help us get to the top. He had a great season and all, but I just don't see All-Star potential in him. A good player none the least, and If we do aquire him, I would like to see us grab another scorer like Shareef.

how is his "D" ?

he kinda reminds me of a similar joe johnson type (obviously not as good) from the stand point that he seems to do a little of everything..

where as joe does a little of everything very good - booby s does a bit of it all GOOD..

but i've only seen about 5 clipper games within the last year.. so maybe i'm way off ?

I wonder what sort of dollars it will take to pry Simmons from LA. I believe alot of us are in a false sence of security that Redd will come round and become a Cavalier. But in reality, its still more likely he remains a Buck. Simmons is quite athletic so I'm guessing he could defend the 2 guard not unlike Joe Johnson. I am starting to look at this guy more closely as he is fast becoming our best option.

Simmons is a good defensive player but would have some trouble defending quicker SG's.
It is far from a sure thing the Cavs will end up with Redd or one of the other top FA SG's. Simmons could end up the best most realistic option left. I think if Simmons gets signed than the Cavs have to add a consistent scorer with some range at other positions. I'd go hard after Shareef if this situation is what ends up happening. He's a consistent scorer with good range on his shot for a PF.
One problem with Simmons is that the Clippers might be willing to pay more to keep him now since they surprisingly made a big offer to Ray Allen and he's now off the market.

I just hope Redd makes his decision quickly so the Cavs can then either move forward with him or move on without him and not lose out on other top FA's.

simmons>>>>>redd in defense.

Simmons stayed in the NBA for his DEFENSE and he gotten BETTER every yr! i know A mac is another thats with me on signing Simmons he will help us get Depth due to him not demanding the max! We don't need another all-star just a player that can hit open shots and score 10-16 ppg a season. We also need a PG. The PG doesn't have 2 start because Snow is still capable to do that and he has shown that if he starts he can be dangerous playing with lebron!

EDIT: he's the bucks backup plan.

The Clippers right now have Marko Jaric to resign, as well as Maggette, Ross and Livingston on the books. They drafted Yaroslav Korolev which adds to the list of backcout guys. If the Clips are sold on Livingston, they can play him in the backcourt with Jaric and Maggette. So the Clippers are not overly light at the swing spots meaning their push for Simmons might not be as great as some may think.

Signing Simmons would definatly save us some money. I haven't really seen the kid play, but if he can give us close to 20ppg then he will do the trick.

Is Bobby Simmons a guy you can leave alone as the 1st scoring option while Z and Bron sits? That is one thing that can seperate him from Redd. Redd could be depended on as 1st option, I don't know if I can say the same thing about Bobby.

I think Livingston is probably going to be a starter full-time for the Clippers next year. The team is definitely sold on his ability. He's as pure of a point guard as you'll get and his handles are very good for his height. Simmons may be playing both sides by saying he'll look at his options but then turn around and say he'd like to be a Clipper for life. So who knows.

I would not call Simmons a first option guy at all, but in small spirts he could be looked at for some plays. He is what you would class as a class role player. Does the small things very well and can fit into many roles.
