BROWNS OFF-SEASON 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
who will be the more famous Mekhi?
-Becton
-Phifer

Remember, Phifer is IN the Eminem song.
Mekhi Becton would be the top left tackle in most drafts. If Wills, Wirfs, and Thomas are off the board at 10 and the Browns select Becton then everyone should still be excited. It’s such a stacked tackle class.

I wanted to respond to this saying he's probably not the best tackle in any class in the past X years.

But, the last top tackles have been

2019: Jonah Williams, Andre Dillard
2018: Mike McGlinchey, Kolton Miller
2017: Garret Bolles, Ryan Ramczyk
2016: Ronnie Stanley, Laremy Tunsil
2015: Scherff, Flowers, Peat

If you take out the tackles from his own draft class, I think the only prospect on that list who was undoubtedly better than Becton was Tunsil, and we know his issues that dropped him.

I'd argue that Stanley, Jonah, McGlinchey and Ramczyk were all better propsects, but if you disagreed, I wouldn't say you're crazy.

This is a fair point. I really liked Ramczyk, McGlinchey, Jonah, and Stanley.

I guess my bigger point is that I do not really think Becton is this prospect fans should be disappointed in getting. I have him, personally, as my fifth tackle in this draft. But I see why people love him.

I think Becton is still a fine tackle, but man, 364 pounds in a zone running scheme is not going to fly in the NFL.

OTOH, if anyone was ever going to be successful at his weight in the NFL, it's definitely Mekhi Becton. Freaky athlete and just incredible length. I'd probably still take him at 10 if he's the only other option.

But we aren't talking about a statue at 364 pounds, he ran a 5.1 40 yard dash. We are also talking about a player who started playing in a very similar scheme with zone blocking last year. There are questions about his pass protection - just enough that I have him in a virtual tie with Jones - but he would be a monster in zone blocking day one.

It’s not a matter of “can Becton get to the second level on a zone blocking run play?” because he very clearly can on an individual play basis. His highlight film is basically full of him absolutely destroying LBs and DBs on the second level.

It’s a matter of “can Becton at 370 lbs get to the second level on zone blocking run plays 20+ times a game and still be able to hold up from a stamina perspective in the 3rd and 4th quarter?”

If Berry, Stefanski and Callahan think he can, then who am I to argue that Becton isn’t able to handle it?

To the questions on Becton in the NFL, it wouldn't hurt to lose some bad weight, but endurance didn't seem like a problem in a zone blocking / play action type offense in Louisville. He went from a second round type prospect at the beginning of the season to a top fifteen prospect because of how he looks in the run game.

He doesn't look as great winning one on one situations in pass protection, meanwhile Josh Jones has shown in college and at the Senior Bowl that is his best quality. So for me, there's the safe route at left tackle if the top three are off the board, or the home run swing. Worst comes to worst, Becton has to move inside to guard until his footwork cleans up like Larry Allen. The ceiling is once he figures out counters on an island, you are taking measurements for a gold jacket when he is in his 40s.

One big concern for me is whether he will keep his weight under control as he ages. Yes he should lose a few pounds, but he absolutely must not gain any (bad weight). That he's a late riser is concerning. This isn't a guy who has played multiple college seasons under the top draft pick spotlight. Could be great, but very risky IMO.
