BROWNS OFF-SEASON 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It’s amazing how much he’s improved. He was an awful blocker in his first few games as a rookie. He’s improved game-to-game and it makes him so versatile.

Blocking is technique, but also a lot of desire....wonder how much Hunt helped him in that area, as Hunt is certainly not afraid to step in and block his little ass off.

or someone else on the line got beat faster and Chubb didn’t have a chance to mess up.

Chubb seems like a naturally hard worker and he's built like a brick shithouse so I'm assuming it was just having the time to adjust to blocking at an NFL level.

He was also given almost no blocking responsibility his last year in college - those went to Sony Michel.

This is also a reason why I am optimistic about Chubb as a pass-catcher. He checks every box that would signal he is a good receiving back, but he just has not seen many opportunities. That will change under Stefanski. Kareem Hunt was not good in the outside zone scheme when he did not have a lead blocker because of poor vision. I think Chubb will have to start becoming a receiving option on third-and-short snaps.

I thought it was criminal that we never used Chubb in the screen game last year. Dude has elite burst and we rarely took advantage of it by getting him the ball in space.

I think the max you can expect Chubb to run is the traditional RB patterns. Swing out into the flat, occasionally run an angle or a wheel.

I don't think he has the "flip of the hips change of direction" stuff that makes a true receiving threat with a more developed route tree, like Duke Johnson had. I don't expect him to look like James White, CMC, David Johnson from three years ago, etc out there.

What I do expect is for Stefanski's offense to put Chubb in positions to succeed, which means we'll all be happy.

But I don't think he needs to be Duke Johnson to be a good receiving back. Hell, he does not even need to be Dalvin Cook (though, I think he is probably closer to that then a lot of people may initially think).

Last season, a significant portion of Dalvin Cook's big receptions came on double-play-action (first to motioned receiver, then to runningback, then pass to the RB) and basic screens and swings to the flat (as you noted).

Chubb needs to be good in space (he is beyond that) and capable of getting to a spot, stopping, catching, and reaccelerating. I think both things are possible.

P.S., the way Duke Johnson continues to be used is criminal. I keep hoping he somehow gets over to Shanahan or McVay.

Duke Johnson has spent his entire career playing for egotistical asshats. Feel bad for the dude because he's just a really good football player. Always efficient regardless of volume.

I remember he got labeled as injury prone here even though he has literally never missed an NFL game. :chuckle:

No, but he waved himself off the field after most of the plays he was at the center of.

Who cares? Dude was always available for us and hasn't missed a game since being traded either. The injury prone label was stupid.

Agreed, he was a good player, maybe a bit overrated here because Browns football sucked most of his time with us. My smilie emoji was omitted by mistake.

I actually think he's always been pretty underrated. He's just always so efficient with the touches he gets. According to Player Profiler, he was #2 among backs in yards per touch last year with 6.5. It's borderline criminal how he has been utilized throughout his career.

Agree that for some reason, he's never been a main cog in an offense. I don't understand why, as he is usually productive when on the field. He doesn't seem to be able to force his way into a bigger role, even in Texas where he seemed to be in line for a featured role. Maybe it's the coaches he's played for, but he's running out of opportunities.
