BROWNS OFF-SEASON 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I seen a few rumors about Clowney. Not sure if any of them are true or not but apparently they were very close to a deal until clowney asked for more money and the browns cut off talks. I wouldn’t mind taking clowney at a 1 year deal around 15 mill and just cut Vernon

you saw

where did you see?

I’d rather just keep Vernon. He’s got no money guaranteed. Clowney is going to hurt us a lot with guaranteed. He’s highly overrated.

Clowney is not a dynamic pass rusher and never has been, but he’s arguably the best run defending EDGE in the NFL and still a very valuable player.

The question becomes how deep financially is a team willing to go on a guy who simply isn’t going to give you double digit sacks.

I would be willing to cut Vernon and give Clowney a contract in the 16 AAV range over 2-3 years if it came down to it.

Not to mention that a contract like that would go right along the lines of what contracts the Browns have been offering this offseason in order to retain that future flexibility.

It would give them wiggle room in a couple years while also allowing Clowney to go secure one final, major contract in his career.

No offense, but I honestly think this is kind of a lazy take... Clowney consistently ranks as one of the best EDGEs in pass-block win rate. He is not Myles Garrett, but he gets a lot of double-teams and beats them, can be played all over the line, and - as you noted - is a great run defender.

Honestly, Clowney’s numbers are promising enough that it would not shock me if he suddenly pulled off a double-digit sack season, especially with Garrett on the other side of the line.

Yeah I would take clowney 100 out of a 100 times over Vernon. If getting clowney for 16 even 17 mill. And cutting Vernon, it really only costs 1-2 mill. I’m good with that. Plus with clowney’s explosiveness I feel like he would fit in great in the wide 9 technique

The potential difference in raw salary between Vernon's current salary and that Clowney rumor is pretty close. But Clowney would require a significant guarantee tied to a multi-year deal.
