Catastrophic loss.

The UP is one of the great gems of the continent.

Staggeringly beautiful place that is evocative of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska rather than the Midwest.

And whose copper and iron deposits were worth 10x whatever Toledo ever contributed.

And the steelhead streams...

Governor Lucas should be dug up and tarred and feathered.
Going for first time in August. Iron Mountain area, not the built up places… btw one of the only places I have seen where property and land is cheap. And I am cheap and think everything is expensive.

If the dome in Brookpark goes through, would that mean you have to go through the Airport/237 exit to get to the stadium?

That is one of the top 3 worst interchanges in the area.

I have long dreamed of buying my own 80 acre lake with about 500 acres up there.

It is readily available too

About 10 years ago, the UPwaterfont.com guy had a 85 acre lake with tidy granite shoreline, including a nice cliff, easily buildable, wholly encompassed by 450 acres of pristine wooded, stony, wilderness for about $500,000. If I had the money then I would have jumped on it. He had several others like it, and they pop up every so often still.

Lots of logging companies divesting themselves of large, untouched tracks.

This guy has all kinds of stuff for those wanting pure wilderness only a two hour flight from Cleveland or Chicago.

Perhaps he has a nice cabin location, or and I have been watching these for a decade, a nice parcel on Lake Superior in the Painted Rocks shoreline called Laughing Whitefish Point.

Tell me you wouldn't die happy after spending every summer on the porch looking out at the water, and swimming on your own rock beach. He has 10 acre plots with lake shoreline for $250,000-$150,000. A pittance for lake frontage with acreage. See the pics below:

Why so cheap out there?
Distance from major cities by car.

4-5 hour drive from Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit.

But only a 60-90 minute flight to Marquette from any of those cities.

Here is an example of what can be had:

3700 sq. ft, on 10.2 acres with Lake Superior frontage.

Gorgeous Log Cabin, 2008 build.

Only $700K.

I think we are going to post up around iron river/iron mountain but do some day trips from there. I don’t have an extra $750k for something like the above, but I do want to check out Marquette and Pictured Rock.
Iron Mountain is appealing bc of the skiiing/snowboarding, which isn’t amazing but does give it winter appeal. There’s also some sort of golf/outdoor resort that was bequeathed and dude said “keep this affordable for people to enjoy” which is pretty gangster.
Looking at that Iron River airport, it looked like the fly direct from Detroit and Minneapolis, but not O’Hare. I think I could sell O’Hare to them, but that’s a bit of a back burner project.
The small lakes are appealing bc my kids like to swim and do water sports, so they will probably enjoy the warmer water of something much smaller than Lake Superior.
That said, LS looks incredible. I think we will find out later this summer!

We won the war, because the war was for the Toledo Strip (for better or worse). UP only came into play to compensate Michigan's loss. Of course, at the time they didn't even realize the value, so with hindsight and a time machine I'd make a deal for steal Wisconsin's mullet and keep the mitten surrounded.

It won’t be. Reverse Snowbirds are going to be a secular trend.

Idgaf about like turning a profit. I just want a piece of heaven that I can afford. Something for the Dagger kids and grandkids to get together and troll me when I am old and senile. Some hiking and fishing and cliff diving.

So yeah, going to give it a whirl this summer. @Sebastian thanks so much! Keep it coming! I might DM you to see how you would handle a 4 day trip or what to do up there. We are in the early planning stages so nothing locked in yet.

We should all move there, become the majority and vote to secede from Michigan.

I can see your point for sure, another airport area convention center will kill the IX center probably. I will also say Indy is a good comparison, but a stadium is so much more than the IX center. Final 4's, super bowls, Bowl games, on top of major convenntions. It wont be as popular as something in Phoenix, nor is the area nearly as populated. But, Haslam is counting on the area being lucrative and the whole area will get a face lift and restarants and bars. It will be much better than the IX Center alone.

Plus the IX center is an 80 year old building, vs a brand new building and even neigborhood.
Back before Continental got eaten by United, the city of Cleveland wanted to tear down the IX Center so they could lengthen the runways and have more international flights. Maybe a draw to the area would revive the airport and this plan, since both demand and an alternative to the IX Center would be in play. Of course, if the trend with China and Russia continues, they could also change the IX Center back into a wartime factory too.

I think the amount of air traffic through the airport went down dramatically because United pulled Cleveland as one of their hubs. If they aren't a domestic hub then there is little incentive for international flights, there just wouldn't be enough demand from the Cleveland market for those international flights.

NFL is scheduling international games every year. Let them subsidize the runway extensdomed.
Plus, Browns/Brook Park can sell the NFL that it will be needed for all the international fans coming in to Brook Park for the Super Bowl in the new dome.
