Game 41 @ Golden State

Halfway Point.

As many of you may have noticed, last night marks the Cavaliers' halfway point of this season. 41 games in, Cleveland is enjoying perhaps its most successful basketball season to date. The one thing that makes it so special, however, is to take that glimpse back into the past. Here's how this season matches up with the first half (first 41 games) of last season:

- Back-to-back losses:

07-08 - 6.

08-09 - 0.

- Longest losing streak:

07-08 - 6 games.

08-09 - 1 game.

- Longest winning streak:

07-08 - 5 games.

08-09 - 11 games (tied for most in Cavs history).

- Record:

07-08 - 23-18, 11-6 vs. the West.

08-09 - 33-8, 13-2 vs. the West.

- Starting Guards:

07-08 - Larry Hughes (27 games): 9.0 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists, on 94-281 (33.5%) shooting.

08-09 - Mo Williams (41 games): 16.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 4.0 assists, on 245-524 (46.8%) shooting.

- Double Digit Wins:

07-08 - 5 games (out of 41).

08-09 - 24 games (yes, that means they have more double-digit wins than total wins at this point last season).

Lastly, with 33 wins at the halfway point, the Cleveland Cavaliers already have more wins than in 16 past seasons.

Clutch.

Despite the fact it was a fadeaway, despite the fact he used Le-Iso for the remaining four seconds, despite the fact he was shooting 39.1% before that shot, you had to have known there was a good chance it would fall. LeBron rubbed it in Skip Bayless' face with that step back jumper at the buzzer. Clutch statistics are defined by how a player performs with 5 minutes left in the game, with neither team ahead by more than 5 points. Last night was a perfect example of what it means to be clutch, as here are LeBron James' stats:

- (last 5 minutes): 8 points, 3-6 (50%) from the field, 2-2 (100%) from the ft line.

If you adjust for 48 minutes, as the stats often do, you end up with these figures:

- (per 48 mins): 76.8 points, +48 points on court.

Here are LeBron's "clutch stats" on the season:

- (per 48 mins): 54.5 points, 21.1 ftm, 14.9 fgm, 48.0% FG, 54.0% eFG, and +27 points on the court (net, not adjusted for 48 minutes).

Last season LeBron led the NBA in clutch points with 56.0 points per 48 minutes.

It's All About the Benjamins, Baby.

While he still appears a bit run down from his battle with the flu, Ben Wallace's impact on the game since his return has been undeniable. Here's a closer look at how he has played since his return:

- (4 games): 3.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 0.8 blocks, and 0.8 steals on 6-9 (66.7%) shooting in only 22.5 minutes per game.

- (adjusted for 36 mins): 5.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, and 1.3 steals.

Also worth noting, since his return, Ben Wallace has not recorded a negative +/- while on the floor, and has had the highest +/- 2 out of the 4 games. His average +/- over these four games is +9.25 per game.

Rounding out the Lineup.

Last night was only the second time this year that Tarence Kinsey and JJ Hickson both recorded double-digit points. The difference between last night and the previous time vs. OKC, however, was the style of the game. While the Thunder suffered a 35 point loss in Cleveland, Golden State took the Cavs down to the wire, forcing Hickson and Kinsey to step up their play in a less-than-friendly environment. Here are some stats from the two:

- Tarence Kinsey (adjusted for 36 minutes last night): 26.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 12 FTM/16.8 FTA.

- Tarence Kinsey (adjusted for 36 mins on the season): 16.0 points, 7.8 rebounds, 8.2 FTM/9.0 FTA.

Also, with the return of Ben Wallace, JJ Hickson has stepped up his play as of late. Here are his raw stats over the last 3, then of course, adjusted for 36 minutes:

- (3 games): 8.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.0 block on 8-13 (61.5%) shooting and 10-12 from the free throw line (83.3%).

- (per 36 mins): 20.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.4 blocks with 7.8 FTM/9.4 FTA per game.

View from the other side:

- Over his last 4 games, Stephen Jackson has been on a tear averaging 25.8 points, 6.5 assists, and 6.0 rebounds. However, he has also been carrying a strong portion of the offense, forcing him to average 5.3 turnovers the last four games.

- Guard Monta Ellis returned last night for the first time this season, dropping his 67th 20 point game as if he hadn't missed a beat.

- Rookie Anthony Morrow recorded his most points in a game since his back-to-back games of 37 and 25 points back in mid-November. Morrow's 19 points came on only 10 shots, including 3-4 from the three point line, boasting his superb 3p% of 52.1%.

Sorry Camakazee but I have some stats. In the last 2 games here are LeBrons stats.

65 pts, 23 rebs, 17 asts, 4 stls and 2 blks.

Simply amazing.

Game 42 @ Utah

Carlos Loser.

For some odd reason, it seems that this series is decided by whichever team has Carlos Boozer on their roster, whether he plays or not. In a phenomenon I will now label "the curse of Gordon Gund," the Cavs are 2-2 versus the Jazz with Boozer and 8-2 against Utah after the Boozer ordeal. Simply put, you can't pull one over on a nice blind man and not expect to pay for it in one lifetime or another. Here is how LeBron has performed against Utah since the departure of Carlos Boozer (record: 8-2):

- (10 games): 32.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 1.9 steals, and 1.5 blocks, while shooting 116-230 (50.1%) from the floor.

Play that Sweet Jazz.

While playing his former team, it has been a "tale of two Mo's" for Cavaliers point guard Mo Williams. For instance, in his first six games versus the Jazz (all of which were with Milwaukee), Mo averaged 8.0 points, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 rebounds on 20-64 (31.3%) shooting, including 2-12 (16.7%) from three. However, in his last three games against Utah (two for Cleveland), Mo has turned it around. Here is a closer look:

- (3 games): 22.0 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.0 rebounds on 25-60 (41.7%) shooting, including 10-26 (38.5%) from three.

Sasha the Starter.

Despite two missed free throws in the clutch (redeemed himself with two made free throws afterwards), Sasha has paced himself very well as the Cavaliers starting two-guard. Aside from his statistics, in his five games as a starter Sasha has made better decisions and has played his best team-ball of the year. Here is a look at his work as the starting shooting guard:

- (5 games): 11.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.0 steal on 22-41 (53.7%) shooting, including an amazing 11-21 (52.4%) from three.

Two Similar Games.

Despite the fact that the Jazz were without Williams, Okur, and Kirilenko when the Cavs won in Cleveland, and they were without Boozer and AK47 tonight, the two games were very similar. For instance:

- 2nd Half Point Differential:

at home: +19 points.

at Utah: +7 points.

- LeBron + Mo:

at home: 58 points.

at Utah: 58 points.

- Bench Points:

at home: 13 points.

at Utah: 13 points.

- Total Points:

at home: 105 points.

at Utah: 102 points.

I think it speaks volumes about this team for them to go on the road, without two starters from the previous match-up, and still produce eerily similar numbers. They found ways to replace the missing production from both Z and Delonte (28 points vs. Utah at home), and did it on the road nonetheless.

View from the other side:

Forward Paul Millsap played a nearly flawless game, posting a huge double-double. These are his numbers against Cleveland this year:

- (2 games): 19.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists on 18-29 (62.1%) shooting.

Point guard Deron Williams set a season high for assists with 16 in tonight's game. His previous high of 15 was posted four different times this season.

 Wow, that's eye-popping even for LBJ's lofty standards.

Game 43 vs. Sacramento

Eeny Meeny Miny MO WILLIAMS.

Tonight marked a huge night in the career of Mo Williams. Also, his play as of late has been terrific. One could only hope the current tear he is on is enough to send him flying into the all-star game in Phoenix. With so many important Mo-related-stats to look at tonight, I'll start off with his first half play.

Last game, Mo Williams recorded a very respectable 25 points, marking his 6th 25+ point game of the season. Here is his statline from that game at Utah:

- 25 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds on 8-20 (40%) shooting, including 4-4 from the line and 5-11 from three (45.5%).

Now here is a look at his stats from the first half of tonight's game:

- 25 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds on 9-12 (75%) shooting, including 4-4 from the line and 3-5 from three (60%).

After matching a great game in only one half, it wasn't hard to tell that Mo Williams was off to a great start. In fact, with that half, he created a new season high for most points in a half (25). Additionally, he set a new Cavalier-high for points (set at 33 in Portland just last week) after recording his 34th point with 5:45 remaining in the third quarter. However, Mo wasn't done there as he went on to record a career high of 43 points tonight. Williams came up 2 rebounds shy of his second career triple double, recording a line of 43 points, 11 assists, and 8 rebounds. However, the impressiveness of those stats should not be overlooked. Great point guards such as Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, and Chris Paul have never recorded 43+ points, 11+ assists, and 8+ rebounds in a game before. Even LeBron James has managed to record that statline only once in his career (43 points, 11 assists, and 12 rebounds at Boston in 2006). Ultimately, Mo's play tonight went beyond exemplifying his play as of late. Here is how he has played over the last 4 games, including tonight (record: 4-0):

- Mo Williams (4 games): 28.8 points, 6.0 assists, and 4.0 rebounds on 41-80 (51.3%) shooting, including 19-37 (51.4%) from three (that's an average of 4.8 three pointers made on better than 50% shooting a game).

Lastly, Mo Williams recorded his 17th straight game with double digit points tonight.

Our Second Option?

All joking aside, LeBron had himself a hell of game tonight, posting a double-double at the half. Playing the rest of the game also helped, as LeBron went on to record his third triple-double of the season. Just as Mo has lit it up over the last 4 games, so has LeBron. Here is a closer look:

- LeBron James (4 games): 30.5 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 10.5 assists.

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. LeBron is averaging a triple-double over the last 4 games despite recording only one of them. Also, combined with Mo Williams, over the last 4 games they are putting up 59.3 points, 16.5 assists, and 15.3 rebounds a game. Lastly, LeBron recorded his highest free throw percentage in a game, 86.7% (on 15 attempts nonetheless), since he went 9-9 against Boston back on the 9th.

Same Ol', Same Ol'

With tonight's win, the Cavaliers have logged five straight wins against the Sacramento Kings. However, despite going 2-0 against them last season, the Cavaliers didn't have nearly as much success as they did tonight. Last season, the Cavs recorded wins of 4 and 2 points, averaging 95.0 points a game to the Kings' 92.0 points. Also, here are LeBron's stats tonight contrasted with the averages from last season:

LeBron (2 games last season): 25.0 points, 7.0 assists, and 6.0 rebounds, on 17-37 (45.9%) shooting, including 1-8 (12.5%) from three.

LeBron (tonight's game): 23 points, 15 rebounds, 11 assists on 5-10 (50%) shooting, including 0-2 from three.

Despite similar shooting percentages and less points, LeBron didn't force the issue as much tonight and worked on other areas of his game more (most notably, rebounding and passing).

Other Notables.

Despite not playing very well tonight, Anderson Varejao has been very solid for the Cavaliers over the last 5 games. Here is a better look:

- AV (5 games): 10.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.6 blocks, and 1.0 steal on 22-43 (51.2%) shooting.

Back to the main story of the night, Batman and Robin:

- LeBron and Mo combined for 66 points, 21 points shy of the Kings' starting five, and more points than the Kings team posted in any 2 quarters combined.

- LeBron and Mo combined for 23 total rebounds, 2 shy of the Kings' team, and 6 offensive rebounds, one more than the King's team.

- LeBron and Mo combined for 22 assists, just one shy of the Kings' team total.

One other notable worth mentioning from tonight is the fact that neither team outscored the opposing team by more than 5 points in any given quarter.

View from the other side:

- Tradebait John Salmons recorded his second straight 21 point game tonight. It should be noted, however, that Salmons scored 12 of those points with less than 9 minutes left in the fourth quarter, after the Cavs took a double digit lead.

- The Kings managed to shoot a better percentage than the Cavaliers for the game, maintaining an eye-opening 50% from the floor tonight.

- The 110 points recorded by the Kings tonight mark the most points scored on the Cavs this season.

According to BBR, 43+ points, 11+ assists, and 8+ rebounds had been done only 7 times before tonight since '86/'87.

Mo and Bron were this close to becoming the 3rd tandom since 1989 to record triple doubles in the same game---last year Kidd and Vincanity accomplished the feat and MJ and the original robin did it back in 89'
