Car Advice

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
My joking point is you dont buy a Porsche because you want to save the planet you got her a California Camry instead, maybe the better car, but the Porsche desire wasnt for the reasons you were comparing them.

But we cannot discuss Elon on here, its a political section only, very polarizing.

We can discuss the type of person that wants the 180k Porsche and will the 80k Tesla scratch that itch?

Oh, it will scratch that itch.

If anyone was thinking about buying a Tesla…Pull. The. Trigger!

Just bought my fiance a Tesla Model X as an X-Mas gift and i wish it was mine. I am literally BLOWN away at how fast it is!? The gas savings is going to be insane and to be honest — it feels good knowing we are helping the environment.

She wanted the Porsche electric vehicle, but i think she will love this. Currently hiding it at my sister-in-laws, until X-Mas day.

You have to give it to Elon Musk — the guy is an absolute genius.
See, I always laughed at the Lexus Christmas commercials w/ the Ribbons on them and shit...like who does that?

You. You do that. :D

A couple we know have two Teslas, both sedans. It seems like one or the other cars is always in need of repair. They were loving them at first but not as much now.
For me it's to early for an EV. Too much risk / change and I know I'd have the range anxiety. And I'm retired. Might consider a PHEV, recently looked at a volvo XC90 plug in, it was nice. And fast too. But even their reliability is so so.
I good with ICE for now.

I work on my own cars and I've spent a good amount of times tracking down used parts. When you look at part numbers and the stampings on them you realize so many parts are just revisions of older parts. It's how the automotive industry has built better quality and reliable cars. It's why I never like to buy a 1st year of a model of car and the last year of a model tends to be the most reliable.

I too will wait to jump into an EV until most manufactures have time to build up their revisions on parts.

No. Building next year and planning to do solar roof + power wall.

Is there a case that there are better value electric cars than Tesla out there, or not?

Honestly don't know.

New chevy Bolt (if you can get it without dealer markup, and adding features doesn't drive the price up too much) is probably the best value. Base list price is $26,595 for both EV, $28191 for bolt EUV.

I just spent some time on their web site, price jumps to get the safety features. Price goes up to $34,895 for Bolt EUV Premier with their best safety features included. I think you have to get hte premier to even have the option for the best safety features.

Problem I found searching on teh chevy site is none of the vehicles at dealers or en route have the safety features.

Best value if you want to use it to travel is a used Tesla Model 3 long range all wheel drive. Long range both has more range and supercharges faster than the base model.

This one has Full self driving for $44,300. FSD itself costs $15k right now.

And this one has enhanced autopilot, which gives the highways part of FSD, but not the city part, for $34,900.

The used one with Autopilot instead of Enhanced Autopilot or Full Self Driving are cheaper, but aren't as good of a value.

One thing to factor in with a Tesla vs other EVs is the potential cost savings of Tesla Insurance. Price varies by state, but in Ohio my insurance is $34.74 this month with a safety score of 98. It is about $4 cheaper on months I get a score of 100. My wife's X is slightly higher at $39.20 with a score of 100. I may not have had the best plan but was paying about $120/month per car before I switched to Tesla insurance.

Forgetting the EV part and the price, is it actually just a good car? Haven't had great experience with low-line Chevys period. And just a quick google search said that they lose a ton of their range when it gets cold.

My brother had a Porsche a while ago. He had a 911 Carrera 2s with a 6 speed manual transmission, it was a 997 for the people that know porsches. It was his favorite car ever but not practical for where he lived. He couldn't take it in any snow at all even though he has used RWD sports cars in the winter before. He said it got questionable in the rain. The front trunk only would a carry on bag and the back seat was made for a 5 year old.

He has thought about getting another one or tracking down his old one since he has more garage space now.

What kind of Porsche were you thinking about getting? 911's are the only ones outside of the ultra rare Porsches that keep their value. I used to think I would get an old Cayenne Turbo or Panamera when they became real cheap but they seem to fall into the hands of people who don't take care of them alot quicker than other old cars. You can find good condition Audi equivalents like the Q7 or A7/S7 for the same price because the 2nd or 3rd owners can still afford to maintain them.
We were looking for mid-size SUVs with real off-road capability that wasn't Jeep, Rover or the G-Wagon.

Believe it or not, the Porsche Cayenne can be a formidable off-roader with the right options. However, it is extremely hard to find a pre-owned one with the right specs.

But, given the prices since 2021, we have chosen not purchase at this time. However, after a lot of research, the only real options are a Jeep or Rover and I don't like Jeeps all that much having had one back between 2009-2014. But when we do buy, it will most likely be a V8 RR Sport with the Heavy Duty Package. Or, if we wait a while, the hybrid version of whatever the best Rover mid-size there is.

I am hearing alot about the Kia crossover EV.. has anyone looked into that?

Father in law has a 2016 911 Carrera S with some sort of additional performance package. Thing has maybe 2500 miles in it. He covers it in his garage with an old flowered sheet and puts a fake owl on top to keep birds from coming in the garage. He also pops the hood on his 1999 grand Cherokee with 300k miles on it to “cool the engine off” @The Oi @Damage

I hope to inherit the Porsche someday (my wife’s brother has already said he doesn’t want it)

Can I have the owl? @Damage will settle for the sheet.

See you this Easter!

Can I have the 1999 Grand Cherokee engine? Seems like he took great care of it. I would like to drop it in a Tesla and convert it to gas.

In or On the Tesla? Either way its probably an improvement.

The Cayenne/Touareg/Q7 definitely can be good off-roaders but what I found is they have limited aftermarket off-road parts options. People have to modify thing that are made for the Touareg to fit on the Cayenne and vise versa. Also the platform is that Cayennes, Touaregs, and Q7s are based off of seem to create alot of unnecessary long and harder maintenance issues. I know on certain Touaregs you have to drop the engine to do the alternator and other routine maintenance.

The RR sport seems like a good fit for you. All Land/Range Rovers are pretty off road capable and there is usually a lot of off-road parts options. I know Rovers tend to have their problems with thing breaking but I don't think they have a reputation for being hard to work on or labor intensive.

My other brother had a Defender 90 that he loved. He has talked about getting the new Defender. From the reviews it seems like a very good mix of luxury and ruggedness. I'm hoping they sell enough of them here that they don't become collectors items like the old ones so I can buy and build a cool one in the future.
