Carl Nassib

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Chad Thomas had measureables but it was so freaking obvious the guys passion was music and he didn't even need football financially.

It is fine to have passions and interests in other things, but if you're gonna make at a top level in the NFL, you need to make football the priority.

Good for him!! Don’t care at all about his sexuality… Just like I don’t care about Myles or Denzel’s sexuality…

If you can play, you can play!!! I want my super bowl…

While it may not be a big deal in the general public, Id imagine football locker rooms are probably still filled with toxic masculinity. So it is still very courageous of him in my opinion.

Im a big fan of Terry Crews and he was pretty outspoken about how mentally abusive football locker rooms can be to any form of perceived weakness. Im sure it has gotten better since Terry left the league, but im sure there is still a gap between what is acceptable in the general public and what is acceptable in the locker room.

I just deleted eight posts, four of which were straight-up bigotry.

To be clear, the rules haven’t changed. If you want to make demeaning jokes about someone’s sexuality - or worse, saying they’re doing it for money - then you should enjoy not being on RCF for awhile.

About. Damn. Time. Especially in football, which probably has the highest proportion of closeted manly gay men. One step closer to JDailey's dream: a world where we don't care about a players sexual orientation, and all are accepted on the field and locker room for who they are. Props to Carl Nassib and hopefully many more to follow.

He was a pretty good 3rd end for the Browns. But, according to Dorsey, he wasn't a real football player like Chad Thomas. Same with Ogbah.

Dorsey set the DE position back a ton with what he did to it.

Nassib is a career third end, he just doesn't do enough with speed rushes or bending the edge. Some might argue that churning the bottom of the roster was necessary since his ceiling was a career depth player.

Interestingly, he is in absolutely no danger of being cut anytime soon... he just restructured to have all of his cap hit pushed to 2022.

Really to summarize this thread. Nassib comes out as the only active gay player in the NFL. People make jokes and call his financial security into question. Then they wonder why it's such a big deal when a NFL player comes out.

This times a million. I was always hoping it would be a significant player, like a pro bowler. But Nassib is on a decent contract and is a starter. Significant enough. I hope this gives others the courage to come out so eventually you no longer have to come out as its a who cares type situation.

I know i am known for jokes, but no jokes here, my daughter is LGBTQ and he is braver than anything I have ever done for doing this, even if Carl doesnt realize how brave this is.

Yup. Anyone who insinuates Nassib is doing it for himself is just showing us more about themselves than they realize.

Life would be far less problematic for him if he kept his mouth shut--he's doing this for other people. It's the right thing to do, and hopefully it starts to make life better for those who follow in his footsteps.

Good for him--it's nice to see.

I think this will be like Michael Sam for Mizzu. Most will either not care or be supportive, and its the one that actually care that will be afraid to come out against him. Times have changed and the male pro locker room is one of the last places that needs to change.

It will be interesting, but its about time to be honest.

I think the fact that the hysteria is about 100 times less than Michael Sam stuff shows how much perspective has changed.

For the better.
To be honest, he should still be here, but instead we decided Chad Thomas was a better option.

I was in favor of signing Michael Sam in 2014 when our front 7 was getting thin, even though he pretty clearly let the fame get to his head and got out of shape.

This was a bit different situation because Nassib had established himself for several years.

Debatable he is a "career" 3rd end. Nassib has played in 73 games, started 37, about half of the games he played he started. Take away the 2 years he played for a horrible Browns team, he still started 22 of 43 games, about half.

Carl is somewhere between DE2 and DE3....call him DE2.5?

He might not be a #1 DE in the NFL, but after today he is number 1 in my heart.

(And that is how you make a joke without getting banned but getting booed, lol)...but i am serious, awesome he was brave enough to come out.

Good for him. I always wished we had held on to him (or Ogbah). Neither are franchise changing players, but both clearly belong in the NFL and have various strengths that could have been utilized on this roster.

Football stuff aside, I hope coming out makes him feel more comfortable and happy as an individual. He has my support.

The Raiders paid him like a #2 DE... but he is comfortably a backup with Yannick Ngakue and Maxx Crosby on the roster.

I'll follow your second point by asking why - in a society where the generation who plays pro sports doesn't care about sexual orientation - is Nassib the only male pro athlete in a major sport to come out? Probably not the teammates who already knew... it is likely the potential harassment from fans who have not accepted the fact society has changed and left them behind.

I am assuming his teammates didnt know, but for sure the harassment from the fans is going to be rough for Nassib. Ignorance is pretty common.
