Cavaliers Trade Ideas: 2022-23 regular season edition

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Why would we go backwards? If we were selling and got a good offer, sure, but we are buyers... tell me how would we replace Allen if we trade him??
Swapping Allen out for say Jaylon Brown would make this team substantially better. So no, it's not going backwards. This team may get to the point where it's difficult to grow and improve, then will have to look at the roster and see if there's any way to add a top 5 or 10 wing without giving up Mobley or Garland.

Center, as a position, is easier to fill-in with a vet minimum guy if the players around that center are exceptional. i.e. Garland, Mobley, and Brown. Mobley will hopefully fill out his frame and be able to play some center as well.

Not saying it's something they should do right now or that a package centered around Allen would ever be enough but if they really covet someone like Jaylon or any other top SG/SF then it's Allen who would be traded and I would fully support that decision.

The way I see it, we have a solid rotation of 7 permanent guys when everyone is healthy (san Sexton, Rubio):

starters - Garland, Okoro, Markk, Fro,Bley
bench - Love, Cedi

You then have that 8-9 spot in the rotation filled by some combo of Goodwin, Lamar, Wade, Rondo, Windler on a nightly basis. Those guys have all stepped up at times, but realistically should be more like 9-10. We have assets: Rubio contract, two DPEs, picks. If we can get someone who upgrades that 8 spot in the rotation without giving up the top 7 and minimal picks you do it. If you can get a better guy in the 8 spot who is young enough to play with the kids beyond this year, then I would be willing to give up picks.

The more I have looked into and thought about it, I am not sure we have someone who is a perfect fit AND gettable. I think EG falls into the first category, except his contract is terrible after this year and likely not worth it. Levert falls into the second category. Other dudes we have been loosely tied to like Grant and Barnes do not fit either imo. I think the guy no one is talking about who fits the first slot easily is Alec Burks who will not cost much to get and give us a good filler for this season.

The problem I have trading for anyone of major importance is we having seen the finish product with this team yet….I mean have the startlng 5 even play X amount of games together yet, along with the bench playing there comfortable roles…..LM was just coming around when he got hurt, I would like to see this starting 5 for a longer stretch of games, now with that said go get me a legit backup PG, and a guy like McDermott that can hit wide open 3 more consistent, I would be happy……let be honest I think health is going to decide how far this team go, along with others teams health
I fully get that thought process. They would be hedging that this team can't become a championship team with Allen before we see how Allen, Mobley, and Garland grow together.

There's still an opportunity cost if Allen is someone other teams view as a center piece for a major trade. I don't think he's there yet, but he's proving to be an incredible value on his contract and most likely a perennial allstar soon to be entering his prime. I would trade him if it means Jaylon Brown, because some opportunities are just too good to pass up. Superstar players, wings especially, are really hard to get. It's the only way I could justify them trading Allen.

I'm not sure if we make the roster better... I get on paper we may, but I don't think it is as easy as you are saying to replace Allen... I think we move Allen, we are a weaker team overall since I feel he has been one of the main reason we have had this success...

It's pretty obvious that Mobley is not ready to be a center full time and may be best utilized if he never has to be. I also think it would be very difficult to find a big that can provide anything close to what Allen does on the defensive end even if we forget his offensive production.

Sending Allen for a talent like Brown is something you'd probably have to do, but I'm not certain it makes us instantly better given we'd have to change our identity without a true center on the team. While Mobley has been wondrous, it's having two guard-switchable rim protectors that makes our elite defense work. Probably worth figuring out but I agree that on paper the move looks better than it's guaranteed to play out.

Looked into a bit more and Burks might be a little harder to get. I dont think we have to surrender any extra picks but he is making 9.5m which is a bit outside the range of the DPE. We would have to move the Rubio contract and probably take back some other bad money (Fournier, Kemba?) which I would rather not do...

The other option would be something like Cedi+Windler but I feel that just fills one hole to open another elsewhere

Can't exact be mad at that deal when it comes to this season... The question is does it put us over the hump and become a title contender?
That would be a big time deal and give us the flexibility to continue to develop and include Sexton and Okoro or to look to use them to balance/improve the roster in other ways via offseason trades.

Burks would not be a bad addition.. he has improved every year since his ankle surgery..

He has elite ball handling skills, solid defense, plays the 3, 39% 3P, 90% FT rebounds.. .. Also very much a lunch bucket kinda guy.. High fit.. might be a good role model for both Okoro and Stevens.. played for Cavs once..

I would not give up a lot to get him.. Rubio / Windler, second rounder in 2022 OR first in 2024..

I remember his game that well but I do not remember him having that “a stack the paint or rim” type of game. Strictly a jump shooter. Correct me if wrong, though.

Burks is one of those guys that does a lot of things well.. Has a 25 hands rating
on 82 games, and is the third best on off on the Knicks squad.. defends the 3 well and is productive there..

I saw him in person for the Cavs. He had a solid sense of where to be, did not get lost on either end..

He is not a superstar, but a solid vet, with some outside game, facilitating ability.. has good attitude, plays actual defense.. Not a home run.. but singles kind of guy. Does not really fit the Knicks.. They are going to have to make some kind of move.. beginning with Thibs..
