Cavs summer league team

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Does look a lot like Korver, coming off screen to turn and nail a three.. but Korver can defend. I am not seeing that kind of athlete..

Colson reminds me of Shaun Marion.. but his vertical sucks..

You will be surprised, but Mathias recorded a 34.5' vertical. He is a solid athlete and is greatly impacted by his weight. Once he sheds some fat and gains strength...he might surprise you with how quick he is. Notice how fast he is coming off screens if it's in the video...better yet, watch a full game if you have the time. You don't have to because you will watch him in Summer league. But he does have real potential despite his awkward physique...I want him to give him chances, certainly more chances than we gave Joe Harris.

He is a better shooter and a playmaker than Harris. You will be surprised with how good he is(at the College level) as a PnR Ball Handler as a shooter off the dribble.

The biggest issue and difference between them is size and reach. Korver other than being a better shooter(it's Korver) is longer and bigger and is able to shoot over defenders with ease...and that's big. Mathias does have a very quick release, but not much elevation.

Mathias was considered a good defender in college according to the eye test and DBPM, though his synergy defensive numbers don't support it.

Big Ten must suck if Dakota was all defense player two years in a row
Do not sleep on Colson, he is good
Two nice pick ups by the Cavs IMO, looking forward to summer league

So why the big ten reference? These two guys have some jazz but neither are elite athletes. And by the way Purdue was pretty good. Something that stands out in the highlight reel, solid teamwork, lots of passes and off ball to get that shot..

You are right I am surprised. In the highlights he looks flat. But I am not going to say Korver is a better shooterperiod. Korver has honed his Kraft for a decade or two . What I like about Mathias is that he is moving hard away from the basket to the screen, gets the ball, spins and shoots fast like Korver, and gets all net. That will get him points spread the floor, make his defender focus on him.

What I like about Colson is he is not bothered by contact or close quarters. Has a spin and fade left hand short jumper, and a right baby hook from exactly the same position. That's going to be tough to defend even at the nba level. He has a decent handle and range. He is built like a three but I think will have to make it as a two to see time, but I am willing to be wrong there.

Mathias looks smart and skilled, we kind of missed having a shooter who can put the ball on the floor if covered and still make a smart play.
Think he can make it provided he can overcome his physical limitations and commits to being an energetic defender.

Just looking at Colson's size and stats, Jae Crowder comes to mind.

Colson projects pretty well statistically (mild negative on offense, mild positive on defense)...if I use his junior year stats. Mathias projects to be a mild positive on offense and a pretty big negative on defense, which is not surprising, but hopefully he can outperform there. Similar defensive projection to Delly, for what it's worth.

IIRC, at the pre-draft combine (work outs) Crowder only measured at 6'4"
