I'm not Native American, so I have no right to tell somebody Chief Wahoo isn't offensive or whether it's racist or not, I suppose. It doesn't offend me one bit, but why would it? Then again, a "caricature" of a white guy wouldn't offend me one iota, either. So, *shrug*

The Fighting Artichokes getting some love, brings back memories. I think the colors were pink and white when I was growing up though...

This isn't really addressed at you @Chris, but I see this mentioned a lot. I also see the questions about ethnic composition coming into play as to who is or isn't allowed to be offended.

Just a quick thought experiment...

Let's say we all have an RCF get-together at a sports bar to watch a Cavs game.. We go to a bar on the West Side of town and while there, the management and staff refuse to wait on me and lets say Richfield.. We ask, what's the problem, not realizing what the issue is, just wanting our drinks, and the management/staff says straight out "we don't like serving niggers here."

Would you, a White guy, get up and leave? Would you be offended? Or would you shrug it off and keep drinking and enjoying the game on TV?

I wouldn't mind a name change. Spiders would work great. Lake Shores. Steamers. Templars. Fighting Kielbasas. I'm up for anything. Even just going by 'The Tribe' would work.

Next level shit right here ? Indians organization would gladly serve Native Americans.

If I heard that from the owner/manager, I'd try to stop you guys from catching a felony charge and go to a better bar.

Even if I was sitting on the other side of the bar, I'd immediately leave and never come back.

Yes, I would get up and leave, and we would go somewhere else. I'll let you make your point, but in the meantime beforehand I don't liken your situation to the caricature on a sports team logo. I know people are going to bash me, but I don't really think it's a "racist" logo, but I am very open to listening to why people think it is. Are we saying that any kind of ethnic/race/etc group represented by a caricature is racist? Is it because it's red?

I also am not going to complain a ton if it goes away, but the block C is still horrible.

Friend or not, if I heard that from the owner/manager, I'd try to stop you guys from catching a felony charge and go to a better bar.

Yeah, I mean, I don't think any of the regulars on this forum would just sit there and sip their 7-Up, whether that was directed at a fellow RCFer or a total stranger. :chuckle:

All kidding aside, I guess I'd actually like a native american's take on this because I honestly dont know and wont pretend to, and I'm sure this has already been hashed out several hundred times somewhere else but I'm too lazy to look.

Is the name 'Indians' considered offensive too, or is it mainly the cartoonish caricature only?

Big article, but this is an excerpt of what protesters are saying: (from 2011)

For several hours, as thousands of fans walked past the protestors on their way to the stadium gates, demonstrators with bullhorns chanted “Your outfits are racist, stop wearing red faces!” and “Where’s your bedsheet?” to the fans, many of whom were wearing clothing adorned with the grinning Chief Wahoo, what one writer once called “the only professional sports logo in the Western world that caricaturizes a race of people”.

The current incarnation is a "softened" version of that terrible one from the late 40's, but if you look at the evolution you see that they are not far apart from each other.

What I wonder, is why this never seemed to be talked about until a few years ago. What all of a sudden caused the logo to be a problem?

To me, I don't care all that much either way about it. But if it offends people then it should probably just be changed.

If you can't express your feelings without using that word, you'd be best suited to just remain quiet.

I remember my Senior year of high school, a girl who sat at the lunch table with me and my friends said she didn't like people using that word, and asked if we could stop. And I did. Sure, I slipped a few times, but she understood.

Asinine is a much more fun word.

@Chris

Racist, right?

Racist, or no?

And of course the comparison has been made before:
