Cleveland Browns 2020 Regular Season: What a Ride!

It is frustrating that a third year QB (if you can even count last year because lord knows it didn't help his progress) under his 4th coach is more worried about keeping guys happy than just making the right play. This is the problem with having a high profile WR on THIS team as constructed.

Mayfield should be solely focused on getting better - This is arguably his best coaching staff and this offense is built perfectly for HIM - providing a bit of a safety net with the way we scheme RBs and TEs, not even factoring in the emphasis on play action.

If we can get Baker humming, this offense will look good and honestly, if we are winning, I don't think OBJ is going to be upset about his volume.

This 20-minute session gives you a progress report with Mayfield’s rebound from a substandard debut against the Ravens:

  • Positive marks for executing the offense.
  • Small but notable improvement with throws over the middle.
  • Improvement needed as a red-zone processor of information from the pocket without bailing from it.
  • Incomplete with managing the pocket and stepping into it under pressure (or, still must prove he can).

Nailed it. The most noticeable thing he needs to work on is making throws out of the pocket. He still feels pressure premature (sometimes it doesn't isn't seem existent) but I can't fault him after last year. He still has some yips he needs to work out and my hope is he will begin to trust this O-line and that part of his game will improve.

My only worry that is unfixable but unfounded is that he literally can't see over his line sometimes, which causes him to roll out to get a better view, which leads to him missing open guys (see 9:51 video). IMO, this can still be contributed to some of the mental yips because when he does have a clean view, he can zip it without hesitation (8:54). Granted this throw might be helped by the fact it appears Bake made the right pre-snap read but still, a noticeable difference and when he gets the ball out quick. Mayfield has always been able to convert on these quick out routes at a successful rate since he entered the league. I want to see more of them sprinkled in.

Last year was terrible for his development but there is nothing in this tape that tells me he isn't physically gifted enough to become a pretty decent player in this league. I'd argue most of his problems are mental right now, only exacerbated by the dumpster fire that was Kitchens. As my girlfriend who could give two shits about football, but is quite the wordsmith put it to me last year, "Mayfield isn't baking anything good in that Kitchen."
