Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We won't see a payroll much above 70 this season and that's not cause we aren't going to spend eventually, it's because of the fact we have so many pre-arb players...

Once guys start hitting arb/we need to keep a nucleus of guys, with the new minority owner, we should be able to keep guys longer term and shell out more money for the roster...
If we can get to a payroll of $70 million this season - it would be a bonanza.

I firmly expect the payroll to be in the $70-$75 million range by Opening Day. I anticipate a couple trades for and at least one FA signing that would likely bump the payroll up to that figure.

I dont think we will get that high, but thats a reasonable budget...

I actually think we will be less, but willing to get there with an in season trade if we are in contention... I think they will leave some of the budget available to make an in season move...

Is there a sport that is need of drastic change more then mlb? It is still trying to operate like it's 1995 in terms of structure. Not having a cap like the other sports is Lunacy. I don't even know any casual sports fans at this point that watch the World Series unless their team is in it. In the early 90"s " everyone I knew growing up watched the World Series" and that was before the tribe exploded in 94.

I speak to a ton of young people at my job and the amount of kids growing up watching baseball seems so small compared to basketball and football. I know you are just taking about the Guardians , but mlb is losing generations of fans slowly year after year and not having a clear cap like the NFl, NHL and NBA is part of the problem.

The union is the problem that way... no salary cap means players can get as much as teams are willing to pay and big markets are willing to outbid on players which keeps putting up the prices... As a player, as long as you produce you will get paid and the more you produce the more you can actually get paid, so in a sense as a worker, I would love that system...

There is a lot of factors why baseball is going downhill... First off the cost of players go up, so do tickets and everything else, so that hurts physically being there... second is how players are marketed. Can you name players not on your home team? Third is the fact baseball is a slower paced sport...Fourth is the access to playing baseball growing up. How many people do you know from the inner city that play/watch baseball? You have very few fields and places to play baseball in the inner cities in the US, but playing a modified football or basketball is very common. Next is the fact baseball is straight cable contract for viewing and the younger generation, who has pretty much cut cable, they don't get to watch games so why should they be fans of a sport that cost them 100+ dollars a month to watch live in region?

I remember living in Indiana, they had 4 teams blacked out... Tigers, White Soxs, Cubs and Reds... so a 4th of the Indians games were blacked out...

If you could watch all the Guardians games without having to pay little to no cost, how many more games would you think people would watch? During the season since I have MLB.tv I always have a live game on in the background whether I am working, reading, relaxing etc...

Looking at the roster makeup since there is nothing else to do right now, the pitching staff has a couple of question marks for me. What becomes of Logan S. Allen and Morgan? Morgan has options remaining and I believe Allen does not. So does that give Allen precedence over Morgan for the long reliever role? Would Garza be preferable in that role to either Allen or Morgan? I think Morris forces his way into the rotation at some point and possibly from the exit of ST. Something is gonna have to give here because there's another 2-4 arms coming quickly. That's not even factoring in if Espino lights the world on fire. There's the injury factor that I haven't considered, but if they come out of ST with everyone healthy then it's going to get crowded unless a trade is made.

There's 7 IFers for 4 positions. We know Ramirez will be at 3B, Gimenez and Rosario will be at SS/2B, and Bradley is at 1B for now. That leaves Chang, Clement, and Miller to find a role. All 3 aren't needed and as of now it looks like Clement is the odd man out because he doesn't play 1B. Honestly, the other 2 shouldn't either but that's a different conversation. Naylor is an unknown at this time and he'll go back on the IL ASAP.

There is 1 C(Hedges) on the 26 man roster and as of now I'd guess my boy Sandy will be the backup. He'll have to be added to the 40 man so somebody will get bumped.

There is 1 OF worth a shit and that's Straw. At this time it's Mercado and Zimmer at the corners. Everyone here knows it will not remain as is.

This roster is a mess. I know changes are looming, but damn what a job MC and CA have in front of them.

I am happy for Josh that he is moving this well after that horrible injury.

Thanks for sharing. Already running around and it's not even 2022... Seems doubtful he'll be starting the season on the 60 day IL.

Criz... it's still straight line running.. a long way to full motion including lateral cuts and direction changes at full speed.. but it is a good sign that he's moving well..

I would be surprised to see the 60 day DL start mostly because they want to give him as much time as possible to get healthy. It's possible it's only the 10 day DL depending on if they need to add another player short term at the bare minimum at least...

Is Tito losing weight? He needs to lose weight if he's gonna make it through the season
yes... how much does a mind weigh?.. that's what he's lost... no baseball.. has got to be killing him !!

I'm sure he still has quite a few more hurdles to go, but the semi expectation I had for him to start the season on the 60 day is all but gone. And more importantly... That extra 40 man spot.

The expectation is still the same. Guy is still 3-5 months away from being cleared to resume full baseball activities.

It’s nice to see him moving forward, but that doesn’t mean he’s close one bit to doing actual things required to play a professional sport.

Unless the season is delayed he’s going to be on the 60 day.
