Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Sean Murphy would be a good target.
I'd actually prefer Jansen to Murphy and he'd probably cost a lot less if available. Same goes for Kelly as Varsho looks to be who the DBacks would prefer in a starting role.

the most obvious need being catching and corner OF'er..
The most obvious 'need' is enough quality starters to cover 162 games.

Without Plesac we don't have that this year.

Plesac is a quality SP with four years of control well below market value...and right at the age when starters generally
come into their own.

He has been a head case that had been 'mentored' by two of the biggest head cases in baseball. But now he spends his time working out with Bieber.

This org can't afford to trade away young quality SPs with control, because of past transgressions. If the FO did things that way, both Lee and Cookie would have been traded long before they became studs for us.

Actually from what I heard Varsho is mostly going to play CF...

Actually they are willing to trade players in Arb contracts years if they keep getting into the doghouse...

We have a ton of SP talent and if Plesac doesn't keep himself in line, I don't blame them for trading him especially if they can net a solid MLB bat for him..

I think you will need to temper those expectations. Extending a SP carries with it significant risk that isn't shared to the extent of position players. That and the SP depth is ridiculous and talented. There just isn't a need to extend Bieber at this time.
fwiw - fangraphs projects us to have the 19th best rotation in mlb

Now I am excited to go to Scooby Doo Bobblehead Day in the Bronx on April 24th vs. the G's!!!

This alone should excite you enough, you shouldnt need the Jose extension to be excited.

Now if it was a Scrappy Doo bobblehead i would understand the need for the extension.

Disagree with this..

Shortsightedness being argue isn't very attractive..

It will definitely excite my daughter for hopefully more than a few innings :)

This can cut both ways. Yes, if we are in contention come July, you want to keep him. If we are not, the argument you make can be made about most of the 10-14 teams in contention (other than Dodgers/Padres who loaded up).

I am against trading Plesac now for same reasons you are. However, if come July, you are going to have Morgan, Myers, Plink and Battenfield all in AAA ready to go full games in MLB. You will have Morris who can spot start (to limit his innings). And, Allen Jr will be in AAA by then as emergency depth. And, you always have Logan Sr and Hentges who can be slowly extended to 4-5 innings by then (and if out of the WC race .... who cares if they get shelled). And, with the next push of MLB talent in Williams/Espino/Torres/Hankins ... you are going to want to start pushing this talent up to speed up the development (even if they get shelled) to see who has mental fortitude to improve after each outing. If they do not come up next year to MLB, will they even fit in AAA/AA as you will have at AA Williams, Mace, Nikhazy, Torres, Hankins and at AAA - Espino, Burns, Allen Jr, .... as a starter???? I am being a little over optimistic but hopefully you get me point. Even though Myers got sent down after a rough spring, he aint going to be in AAA for 2 seasons as a starter. Same with Pilk and Morgan.

I would trade Plesac if I could fill a hole in the lineup with a quality cost-controlled guy. I am not trading him now for a AA shortstop or a Single A catcher. But if the Angels wanted to trade Adell or Marsh in a Plesac centered deal, I would look at that hard.

When it's all said and done, Jose Ramirez will be the most beloved Cleveland Indian/Guardian since Bob Feller. I can't wait to be at the ballpark on April 15th and be part of the deafening ovation he will receive.
