Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Don't understand the Franco contract at all.
Do they intend to offer a bigger contract to Arozarina?
He's proved more.

No comparison between 20 year old Franco and 26 year old Arozarena. Assuming expected skill growth in the build to his prime, Franco has a chance to be Hall of Fame great and the contract ends about the same age his prime ends.

With the kind of pure contact that Franco is making at age 20, at a premium position nonetheless, there's a reason why he could easily be valued the highest over that time span in all of baseball. The only reason why that number isn't much higher is due to all the pre-arb and arb years in there.

He does seem to exude an attitude but I'm guessing TB trusts his work ethic and that he'll keep it up even with all the money up front. That's the only issue I'd worry about. You can be cocky and still have an amazing work ethic, and honestly who wouldn't if you're 20 and that good at baseball?

Assuming he doesn't suffer a myriad of injuries, this Wander Franco deal is absolutely unbelievable for the Rays IMO.

Had they let it just let it play out with Franco, they'd have paid him approximately $65M over his three pre-arbitration and three arbitration years and they would have assuredly lost him as a free agent after 2027.

So subtracting the $65M they would have paid him anyway, the Rays essentially they gave Franco a 6-year, 142M dollar deal for his age 27-32 seasons which only 23.6M AAV. Absolute robbery from a team perspective.

Assuming Franco stays on the path he's on, what do you think he would have gotten as a free agent at age 27? A whole hell of a lot more than 6/142 that's for sure.

Though it is hard to argue against the deal from Franco's perspective either. He now has more than $200 million in career earnings assured at age 20.

I get it for Franco too. He completely protected himself from career altering injuries with life changing money.

And if he's as good as everyone thinks, he'll hit free agency at 31 and be able to cash in for another 100-200M anyway.

As the arb year contracts keep increasing, you need to offer up the guarantees a lot earlier to buy out the risk. Something Cleveland needed to do with Lindor after his rookie year because once you get about 3 years in, the risk gets a lot lower for the player.
