I'm having a hard time evaluating his game.

Where is his fire? He seems indifferent on the court.

what is his philosophy as a PG?

why does he turn down open 3s?

how does he create so much lateral space east-west and simultaneously look slow as shit in the lane?

Just weird.

I think the indifference on the court is the biggest knock I have for him. Beyond his height, Garland just doesn't pair well with Sexton. Garland slows down the tempo and gives nothing in transition. Running in transition should be part of the identity of this team with Sexton.

He reminds me of George Hill on offense especially when he runs the point. No aggressiveness to his game and you know he should be launching a bunch of 3s but he doesn't.

There's a good comp. Way smaller, but offensively. Yes. George Hill. Like George Hill's best year is what I think Garland's ceiling could be.

Plays this very slow, sleepy style and avoids contact. Can shoot when he's open but not so much when he's asked to get space for himself. He'll put up good 3 point shooting numbers but on low volume.

I've been trying to think of the right guy, because Augstine is lower tier, and I don't think Garland's ceiling is quite that low. Hill was a league average to slightly above league average PG for a good number of years. ANd his style feels similar.

In fairness, nobody pairs well with Sexton. Colin like Drummond is a bunch of noise and statistics that don't lead to winning. Garland wants to be a beta. He would have fit in well with the original LBJ era. Just stand back in the shadows and watch.

Interesting reference. He's definitely one of those guys who could've been elevated into pseudo-allstardom like Mo Williams if he played with a LeBron and was able to stand in the corner and hit open 3s and do his floaters with zero traffic.

I do think Garland would have been fine in the LBJ era too or on the current Lakers if they never traded for AD. He is like a 3rd or 4th option player that conforms to an offense not dictates it.

I think Sexton could actually lead to winning but probably not as your best player. He probably would fit right in as a teams 2nd best player. At best he is in a 1a/1b scenario with some solid scoring options in the slots below him.

defensive guards with size pair well with sexton. last year delly and sexton were good together, even if delly had zero points in some games. exum too in pre-season and early season.

the problem is, who pairs well with garland? only allen because of the highlight reels. but play wise, garland is too relaxed, don't shoot, doesn't defend and don't even make the right decisions with the ball.

I think you have to surround Garland with shooters on offense. He does a good job getting into the lane. Once there his first instinct is to look for the pass. But when your 3 point shooting options are Sexton, Okoro, and Cedi - well, your options aren’t good. On D he’s just a liability and I don’t know how to cover that.

George Hill was a plus defender who could switch onto 2's with his length well. Don't ever see Garland doing that

i believe you, except the "does a good job getting into the lane". a lot of times he has his man beat, or has curled off a screen, but he chooses not to go into the lane. that is one of my problems with him.

This is such a lazy take, as efficient as Colin has proven he can be, paired with the right point guard he would excel. Drummond however has yet to prove any efficiency and just chucks.

If this team had a SF that could score our 2 young guards would look much better. Also doesn't help anyone that we have a 6'7 sf playing PF. Is there no big anywhere that could play PF for while Love and Nance are out? No one in the G-league we could try? To me it screams obvious tanking.

i feel JBB is just auditioning how garland, okoro, windler and stevens will play. JBB is such a tank commander

He has some good PG instincts but is killing the offense with his reluctance to shoot. I don't get it at all. I've been noticing some indifference and bad body language on the court too. I get he's still very young and the team has been playing ugly ball. As a PG he has to be better than that though.

Defensively he and Sexton are not going to work. Even Portland despite having a potential HOF'er in Lillard cannot make the diminutive backcourt work enough to get off the mid tier playoff treadmill.
