I've been thinking the combination of his low release and lack of alpha mentality is probably why he's gun shy. Dude doesn't want to force shots but also can be closed out on easily

People need to stop expecting the majority of offense to come from our guards this season. The Cavs are trying to build a Spurs type system, not a Portland one.
Why play two undersized and defensively suspect guards if you don't expect the majority of your offense to move through them?

Whether you want a Portland-like team or not -- that's what we have?

Campazzo making Garland look like he's standing in wet cement.
To be fair Garland has been hurt, may not be 100% and it's early in the season. Campazzo is also one of those high-energy international, scrappy guys who plays like he just finished some bath salts.

Talking about Campazzo, he's very fortunate he didn't try that dirty, knee buckle move on Sexton. Young bull probably wouldn't have had the restraint that Rubio had and I think things would have gone down a lot differently if he tried that with Sexton. Campazzo would probably be in the concussion protocol right now.

I talked to @RchfldCavRaised offline and he has a theory that Steve Nash is going to be brought in to coach the Cavs this offseason.

He’s willing to bet anyone in this thread $50 with the bet to be paid within 40 days of the end of the season. If they are not paid on time, the bet converts to a loan and loser pays a penalty fee of 90% APR for every day overdue.

I thought it was strange, but I did take the bet. If anyone else is willing you can sign up here.

I can tell you the first guy in line for this...

@Lee hasnt forgiven me since I shared this private picture of him with the guy who he affectionately came to call "Papa Calvin" back when Calvin Murphy was making house calls.

Because the Cavs have Allen and Mobley and the Blazers don't. The Cavs have an opportunity to build something special with a truly elite front court. I don't anticipate that both Sexton and Garland will be here long term unless one, or maybe even both of them are willing to come off the bench. You build around the strengths of your best, most impactful players. We've seen the results of a guard centric offense for three years running. It's way early, but the present results are way better.

I loved this because I was thinking this exact thing during the game last night.

Late last night, I went looking for a "archetype" for this and stumbled on Nash and Nellie. Look at Nash's career numbers and then look at his first full year as a starter (yr 3, 24 yrs old, first year in Dallas under Nellie).

Now compare that season to his "breakout season" under Nellie two years later at 26 years old.

That season's statistical output is EEERILY similar to Garland's season last year.

The question then becomes, what did Nellie do with Nash to unleash him and help weaponize his scoring as much as his passing that season?

I found this game from early in the season against Portland who was coming off the WCF hangover against the Lakers the year before. Watch how Nash starts the game with his first two scoring possessions... that running floater that we had Garland working on all of last season has been abandoned so far early this season as he's learning how to fit in with the new toys Mark and Mobley in this new offensive system.

I believe as Garland gets back to weaponizing that, and trusts it, we'll see a more assertive scorer who takes some of the Rubio approach to moving the ball and balances it out with more of the assertive scoring we saw last year when he and Sexton was ball dominant in order for us to have a chance to compete most nights
Garland does play a similarly looping/probing style as Nash would, where he's trying to bait the help to him for the pass.
Having multiple lob threats should be a boon for him as the season goes on. I'd like to see him have a more straight forward elbow pull-up added next to his floater. Chris Paul uses that to get his bigs open constantly. It's not the most "analytically sound" shot, but what it helps set up is dunks and open 3's. Nash had it too.

Agreed. Those CP3 to Tyson and David West lob lineups in NOLA that proceeded lob city in LA really helped him get his footing as a playmaker.

I once heard Shawn Kemp telling Pappa Calvin say "Damn Murph, you need to start wrapping that thing up"

Its only now when I look back I knew what he meant.

Unfortunately for us, the most striking similarity so far between Garland's game and Nash's is their defense :chuckle:.

I kid, I kid. Nash is a good comp for Darius to learn from. Looking forward to seeing him grow this year.
