The rookie year stats between Kyrie and Trae are very similar, except for the percentages. However, Trae played 81 games and Kyrie 51...30 less.

Trae stats:

G GS MP FG FGA FG% 3P 3PA 3P% 2P 2PA 2P% eFG% FT FTA FT% ORB DRB TRB AST STL BLK TOV PF PTS
81 81 30.9 6.5 15.5 .418 1.9 6.0 .324 4.6 9.6 .477 .480 4.2 5.1 .829 0.8 2.9 3.7 8.1 0.9 0.2 3.8 1.7 19.1

Kyrie
51 51 30.5 6.9 14.6 .469 1.4 3.6 .399 5.4 11.1 .491 .517 3.4 3.8 .872 0.9 2.9 3.7 5.4 1.1 0.4 3.1 2.2 18.5

Then any player's stats are similar.

Kyrie was an advanced stat darling. Trae was one of the worst.

Kyrie shot much better percentages. Trae shot below league average.

Kyrie played on a much worse team against much better defences in a much slower pace. Trae enjoys the lax defense, moving screens and faster pace.

Trae would have struggled on that Cavs team.

The thing is that Sexton is also a "green light" type player, who on the offensive end wants to attack the basket and take lots of shots. (Sexton's rookie year usage rating was over 25%, very high for a rookie -- compare Lebron rookie usage rating of 28%). A green light for Garland too is going to mean our offense is basically just those two trading off taking shots.

Another reason why the Sexton-Garland pairing could be a problem.

Trae Young and Curry all struggled figuring out the balance of running the team and finding their shot as rookies. Curry needed Montae Ellis shipped out to find his role. So far, it looks to me like Young made huge improvement in his ability to run a team over the summer after working with Steve Nash. This is likely going to take a little while for Garland to figure out.

Or maybe just ship Sexton out. Sexton is kinda like Monta smaller score first guards who have never met a shot they don't like. Both pass at times but their passes seem forced 90 percent of the time. I liked the Sexton pick and I still like his upside as a scorer but if we can flip him for a similar rising talent on the wing or a big we need to. Garland is clearly Beileins center piece. We need to do everything we can to make it work.

I think he is at worst a great replacement for Clarkson.

The way I see this playing out is either

The 2 guard front works and We have our backcourt already

Sexton is a really good scorer and we have to make him our 6th man and Porter, Windler or Cedi take over starting 2 spot

We ship Sexton out in a trade for someone really good to complete the starting lineup. Beilein makes guards look good, so this is further down the line. He is also 20, and i think he is a dangerous scorer, so we should not be hasty in trading him. If he doesn't work as a starter, you can move him to the bench when Clarkson is shipped out. i did think it could be cool to have Windler start at 2 with Garland and suddenly have length on the wing.

I acknowledged he was a good scorer. But he also has tunnel vision and doesn't get his teammates involved. At the start of the game vs the Magic when Sexton got the ball he went and tried to score instead of continuing to move the ball. If we can deal him for a big with upside or a wing with upside its the smart play. If I didn't feel like Sexton would impede Garlands progress I would suggest keeping him. But as long as Sexton is playing with Garland it will impede both players from progressing.

I don't think so. He is not as bad as Clarkson. He has been making passes around the basket instead of trying to finish when there is a crowd. He had 2 assists while barely handling the ball. He took 8 3's all of the catch and shoot variety.

There are very few guys who can score like that. He is 20. I think it would be foolish to trade him now.

You want to trade him after literally one game in a brand new role when he is 20 years old and we know he has super improved already. Lol. I don't blame him for the shots he took last game when they had trouble scoring. The 2 better scorers on the team shot way way worse than him and looked like shit.

I don't want to trade him cause of the first game of the season. I don't think he meshes with Garland. If we can trade him for a better fit with Garland it would make sense. Or if they would bench Clarkson. Start Knight with Garland and have Sexton run the 2nd unit it would be better for Garland and Sexton. Sexton isn't as bad as Clarkson but he still has tunnel vision. No one can argue that. He doesn't have PG instincts and those can't be taught. He's very similar to a young Monta Ellis and thats not the type of player you want next to a guy like Garland.

It's a brand new system and new team. You are putting a cap on a guy who has already improved his game. You don't have to be a great passer to be a sg. He shoots a great percentage. Tunnel vision is fixable, black hole is not and he is not a blackhole

Agreed 100%. Not saying Garland and Sexton are guaranteed to meet their full potential as a combo, but what exactly does “impeding both players from progressing” mean? Defensively maybe, but Giving Garland more time on the floor without sexton doesn’t do anything for Garland other than take away a scorer. Trading away Sexton and bringing in a wing or big with upside does what exactly? Other than automatically eliminating 15 points that Sexton will put up. Is Garland going to make that up? Unless Garland becomes a 30ish PPG scorer than is a wasted effort - and how long would it take Garland to get to that level anyways? Plus, I think Garland is too much of a facilitator to get to a 30 pt. Avg. (at least in the next 3-4 yrs). He is not a Curry IMO, his passing comes more natural than Curry’s. It’s true that Sexton and Garland maybe shouldn’t co-exist in the same lineup, but there’s no way you pull the plug anytime soon, before Garland gets his feet wet, Sexton settles into year two, and their chemistry starts to build.

I think sexton and garland will thrive in a fast past system with a lot of movement.

Very annoying Coby White is off to a great start, hopefully Garland can ball out tomorrow

Why is it annoying?

White is not the better pick, so he can ball however and whenever he wants. Could care less about what he does seriously. Good for him.
