Day 1 Draft Thread [Rounds: 1]

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Fair, but even linebackers are asked to play coverage.

Running backs are often pass catchers and some backs are receivers even more than they get carries out of the backfield. I am worried about the team with a stud tight end finds a match up with Peppers. It'll be a massacre.

I'm worried that his coverage issues could be serious enough that teams would attack that weakness. I don't know the ins and outs of the Williams defense, so maybe he could find a way to disguise this. But, as an offense, I think it would be pretty easy to attack Peppers.

One-on-one man coverage isn't the only skill Peppers lacks. He isn't good in zone because he is too aggressive and attacks the first movement too much. (Check the scouting reports, it is under weaknesses, he has poor positioning and technique). Is this something he could learn over time? I have no doubt. But, another poster mentioned earlier that Cyprien was available and he is something like the 26th highest paid safety in the league. Why not grab him instead of wasting a premium, first-round pick?

That's all I'm wondering.

No doubt, I never said he'd never play coverage, just not his main gig. Cyprien is the right kind of safety, but I'm not a huge fan. I put 0 stock in PFF, some of their rankings are just stupid to anyone with eyes. Peppers is 10x the athlete he is and has a pretty big ceiling. Will he ever reach it? Who knows. I do think he has his best chance of doing it in this scheme though.

I appreciate you divulging what you were thinking before.

I genuinely have considered what you are saying and I hope you're right! If the Browns can find a way to disguise him defensively and make it so he is just wreaking havoc constantly, it'll be a major improvement from what we've seen recently from the Browns defense.

Obviously, he has great straight-line speed and athleticism. I hope his tackling technique does translate to the NFL. It's going to be extremely important for him since he is going to be asked to be able to be formidable against the run and the pass.

You, like all of us, will be pleasantly surprised. I think he was entirely overrated in college, maybe the most.

But if you rank importance for Gregg Williams, that stupid ass rover spot that it seems like only he uses is tip top. He's never had Jabrill Peppers caliber talent. It's exciting.

I'm with you and I'm excited to see how it goes.

I was an Obi Melifonwu supporter coming into the draft, so that's one reason I was upset they took Peppers instead.

But, there are benefits and downfalls to both. Peppers was probably the higher touted prospect, by media outlets at least.

I think you are right Peppers can fit in that Rover spot, I'm just worried it might take a couple seasons to figure it out. If anyone can make it work, it's Williams.

All I am saying is, estimating how college skills estimate to the pros is not an exact science.

I also really liked Howard, King, Hooker and Conley. Part of the reason I like so many DBs is because that's a huge area of need for the Brownies.

I am not sure how Garret and Peppers will compliment each other when you think about it. Having two fast blood hungry freaks on the same side will let one of them get lose assuming the play does not break. Peppers and Garret together in time is a very scary thing because if they can learn how work together. Imagine some sets where you might throw Garret at LB and Peppers at SS in a Blitz formation. It gives the team defensive options and we get a stud returner. The size of a man never mad the man great it is up to the man and plan to make the man great. I love this first round by the Browns and maybe the best picks with a actual plan in place.

I want people to know I am genuinely not trying to be a hater. I am just not sure about Peppers' pro potential. I know I'm not the only one who feels that way. So, please don't take it as hate. I want him to succeed and I think it's possible.

But, like any other draft pick, you never know what's going to happen.

I am with you my man as he adds and will help Garret get open or vise versa like I said. That video sold me and made sense and to have a guy who can do it all. I think he also will gets snaps as a RB as well, They kind of see him as a Dion Sanders type guy and if he plays close to that I am good.

Lets get to the real good thing that happened that is Myles Garret he just sounds like LeBron James and has that same attitude has LeBron. He said it gives him motivation when they count him out, This dude is going to be a beast and I am super excited about him after that conference call. This guy means business and Browns fans should be excited.

Wow guys, I just went through and read every post in this thread and I'm shocked. I honestly thought we'd be pretty pumped.

1) Myles Garrett is going to be a game wrecker defensively. He's a stud and we finally hit one out of the park and didn't overthink it.

2) I'm an Ohio State fan, 100%. I love me some Malik Hooker. I was stoked when he fell there at 12 and was bummed we traded out..... However, Peppers is a very good player despite the hyperbolic negative reactions. Of all defenses to put him in, his run-stuffing/blitzing safety skill-set will fit perfectly with what Williams wants to do. Never mind that he will instantly be our explosive punt returner and kick returner. Oh yeah, and we picked up another first next year... that's a win. Honestly. He didn't deserve BIG DPOY, Hooker did. However, he has the potential to be special with the proper coaching and an actual defined SS role.

3) Coming back in and grabbing Njoku is clutch as hell. 20 year old who tests off the charts and is going to inject life as a pass catcher and matchup nightmare. I'm glad to get a 5th year option on him. Any other year without Howard, he's the prize tight end prospect of the draft.

We got better today, brethren. Sure, I'd have done some things differently, but I respect this front office. We came away with a transcendent DE prospect in Garrett, a guy with an enormous ceiling at a position of need (SS) in Peppers, the 2nd best tight end in a loaded class in Njoku, and a 2018 first. I love it, even if it did hurt my soul passing on Hooker.

This is an outstanding Peppers video analysis. Highly encourage you to watch.

Did you see that jersey he was wearing though?

It was like... Blue. And Maize.

Garrett is a grand slam. Great pick.

Peppers has a lot of pressure. Passing on Hooker was a very ominous position to be in but to take a safety after that, is going to be pressure packed. FWIW, I so prefer Peppers at 25 to Adams in the top ten. I also think hes perfect for Gregg Williams.

Now, am I saying its a great pick? No, not yet. Peppers has to develop some type of ability to defend the pass. If he does, he'll become the best safety in the draft because of how dynamic he is with the ball in his hands. He instantly improves our punt and kick returns and gives us an option to run wildcat on offense.

Njoku is a freak. This TE class was freaky and deep and Njoku going at 30 is a great example of both. His spark as a TE was something like in the 96 percentile which is incredible. He needs to learn how to block and his hands are not super natural, but to snag him as a 3rd first rounder after Evan Engraham was gone is great value. Hes a redzone nightmare.

I fully expect day 2 to give us Dobbs and a FS. Marcus Williams would be the ideal FS. Still a TON of DB talent in this draft.

Other players I would want day 2 are Kareem Hunt, Cordea Tankersley, Chris Godwin, Zay Jones, Obi, McDowell, Lamp, Mixon, Cook, Washington, Owusie, King.

Thats just off the top of my head. This draft is so sick with its talent.

I am not sure how Garret and Peppers will compliment each other when you think about it.

I'm pretty sure it would go something like this:

Peppers: "Myles, you're the Godzilla of edge rushers! Except with really, really long arms!"

Garrett: "Why thank you,. Jabrill. You'd have made a fine velociraptor yourself."

Haden: "What about me guys?"

Hue Jackson: "You're a fossil brah."

I really liked this video. Had me feeling better about the pick.

I would like to hear what others think about it.

Great video - interesting to hear how a guy who didn't like him came around, particularly in terms of his coverage skills.

And I don't mean this disparagingly, but it's also easy to see why OSU in particular fans may not like him. His worst matchup was on Samuels, so they saw him at his worst. But as the video pointed out, it's not reasonable to expect a SS to stay with a receiver who runs a 4.31.

So again.. Hooker. Everyone wanted Hooker. Ideal safety, right? Pages of people asking for him. He couldn't tackle in college. What will he tackle when people are bigger and faster? Grass? He had shit angles to balls. Is that just going to be even worse?

Unfounded, empty hate and negativity. This organization values athleticism and fit. They saw a player who fits Gregg Williams SS position, and who is by far the most athletic and dynamic person he's ever coached at that position.

Stop digging your heels in. No one is saying he's an all world barn burner pick. I wanted Kevin King or Njoku (weird draft for me). I still would have picked either at 25. Heck, I secretly crossed my fingers for Foster. I still want Kevin King.

But he makes sense for the Cleveland Browns probably more than any other team in the league, and that's where their board said it was time to pick him.

Saying Malik Hooker can't tackle is the literal definition of unfounded hate.

Get over yourself already.

I've made my thoughts on Peppers clear, but come on...
