We could have outbid the Mets pretty easily...
Remember the A's have two more starters to move...
Why?.. to get another SP?.. The Guardians need catching and outfielders.. even if they're a part of a season away from being ML Ready...
There were two separate deal that were posted at the BTV site:
75543 by Chev Chelios Oscar Mercado OF for the Texas Rangers Ricky Martin LHRP .. same thing.. why trade away an OF'er?. This is a minor deal..1.4 for 1.7.. so not a lot of value.. but.. With the movement of Kiner-Falefa to the Twins and return of Mitch Garver, the Rangers are MORE that set at catcher for the next year or two.
So.. the thought is.. expand the deal... include the original deal.. but add the pieces that are needed to complete the teams.. The Rangers moved their projected starting 3B and their 3B in waiting (Josh Jung) injured himself preparing for the coming season.. IF we're keeping JRam for the time being (and you're still making an idiot of yourself by telling anyone what my thoughts are about JRam), then put Gabriel Arias into the deal. Arias is well suited to play 3B.. but can slide over to SS when/if Jung is ready.. so it makes sense for the short term as well as the long term for the Rangers.. The Guardians give up Arias and Mercado.. while receiving Sam Huff, Ricky Martin and a lottery ticket: Ricky Vanasco.
This deal is coupled with the next Guardians posted deal # 75574 posted by Marval. This poster has James Karinchak going to the Padres for Luis Campusano, MacKenzie Gore and Wil Myers.
Note: With the 40 man roster packed.. Logan S Allen will be sent to the Rangers.. and one of Naylor / Vargas added to the 60 IL at the time the team requires the roster to be adjusted. I.O.W, not a big deal and certainly not a reason to stop the deal..
Plesac or Gore (along with the lottery ticket) can be packaged for a young OF with control.
The pen can be fixed with one of ten inhouse candidates..
Our catching situation goes from a dire emergency / total clusterfuck to a position of strength. Having two ready now back stops, one with plenty of options, gives the two kid catchers in the minors (Lavas and Naylor) the chance to properly develop to their full potential.. That is, not push them beyond what they can do.. or should do.. Catching becomes one of, if not thee strongest areas of the Guardians' team..
By adding Wil Myers, we'd get a RF'er who can actually play the position defensively...
Payroll goes up.. about $ 20 MM.. it's the price of doing business...
Two deals.. no JRam involvement.. no SP involvement.. Catching fixed.. one OF'er in.. and plenty of promise..
