Early 22 GM Thread! (Trade Ideas here)

Yep, hitting is not the problem and we should focus on run prevention as some on this board insist.

Yeah, this fabulous lineup will be fine if the pitching staff can keep its ERA under 1.

I mean what fucking professional baseball team gets no hit for 13 consecutive innings and counting? How about no hit 4 times in 1 season that isn't even over? Yet pitching and defense are the problem. SMH!

Currently the Indians have five players residing on the IL:

Shane Bieber: Will be throwing around 45 pitches in a Columbus Clippers game tomorrow. He is ten days two weeks of being activated to the parent club.. All information regarding his return are showing that he is fit and ready..

Nick Sandlin: Left the game on August 12th with what looked pretty bad.. The MRI that followed showed what was called a very minor strain of his shoulder. A 2 to 4 week time frame was given as "typical" of this kind of injury... There has been little or no further information, subsequent to the initial MRI and CA comment. Best guess, the next time Cleveland fans see or hear anything about Sandlin will be in Spring Training..

Roberto Perez: Is playing in minor league rehab games and could return at any time..

Wilson Ramos: suffered a blown knee (ACL and MCL).. for a catcher, this could be devastating.. Best guess, the CLEFO will attempt to bring him back in the 2022 season.. however, unlikely..

Josh Naylor: Naylor was carried off Target Field in Minnesota on June 27th after colliding with Ernie Clement chasing a fly ball... Naylor was diagnosed with very serious "multiple fibula" fractures (smaller/thinner lower leg bone) and torn ligaments in his ankle. The prognosis is for full recovery, however, that may not occur until even after the start of spring training 2022.. There is hope he'll be fine.. but..

These are the five most serious injured players currently on the roster.. Naylor, Ramos and Sandlin will not return this year.. Bieber and Perez should be back within 10 days..

For the Cleveland GM, the return of these guys is a factor in deciding what moves will be needed..

Johnson, Mercado and Harold should all be released come October. Can't win with any of them.

We will keep one of them... Id vote on Mercado since he is a plus defender with MLB experience and can play the MIF if emergency comes up...

Under what emergency would Mercado be forced to play in the infield? COVID-19 outbreak? Team wide food poisoning?

Mercado needs to go. Seen enough of him. The corner outfield spots are beyond pathetic and upgrades are not needed...major upgrades are needed. They can possibly solve at least one internally. But both spots need major upgrades. If not, they have no chance to compete next season, even with a really good staff.

You never know when you need an emergency guy at certain positions and Mercado was originally a SS, so it's not like he cannot play there...

Also I am looking at the fact we have Jones, Kwan etc who likely could contribute in 22, but at left handed hitters... We lack RH depth at the current moment in the OF, so why not have a plus defender who hits from the right side as a 4th OF? If I am choosing between Johnson, HRam and Mercado, it's Mercado 100% of the time since we need to keep a right handed OF plus he is a solid defender.

That is, and should be a non-factor in regards to Mercado. If you like Mercado over the other options then that's understandable with the reasoning you gave, but choosing him because you think he can play MIF(he can't) seems a bit ludicrous to me.

So I guess 2400 innings doesn't count as being able to play in the infield... Now his range was good, just made too many errors (kind of like Amed essentially) so he got switch to the OF...

Oscar Mercado is at least competent enough to play just about anywhere on the diamond save for pitcher and catcher, given time and opportunity.. He's just best suited for the OF where his best tools can be exploited..

Otherwise.. it comes down to who is best suited for the opportunity to play that day.. Most days, it will be someone other than Mercado.. but.. Mercado is cheap and on the roster already..

...and not sure what the fourth or fifth OF'er on this year's teams has to do with an early GM thread...
