Ex Guards are the Best Guards {'24}

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Not intending to beat a dead horse, I'd much prefer to ride one while alive.

The post-Cleveland All Star team so far:

C Yainer Diaz: 2 HRs, 4 RBI, .444/.500/.778/1.278
1B Yandy Diaz: 1HR, 5 RBI, .263/.318/.474/.792
CF Will Benson: 1 HR, 3RBI, 1.145 OPS

Ran out of time for now so had to stop. Phil Maton has been getting smacked around. Richie Palacios has been useful for the Tampa GuardRayls. Josh Bell started off fine. Aaron Civale was immaculate. Good news is, they are all due for regressions because they aren't all first ballot HOFers, and the offense looks fine so far so none of them.are really needed anyway.

And Junior Caminero, so far AAA:
1 HR, 2 RBI, 1.012 OPS

Current outfielders Brennan, Freeman, and DeLauter have a chance to take away much or all of the sting of trading Benson and Jones. We already have Kwan. Angel Martinez could figure into the outfield picture as well and Juan Brito is being converted to outfield. Not to mention our #1 overall pick will probably be a guy like Condon or Barrazzo who gets converted to outfield.

Justin Boyd, the 2nd round pick we got for Benson, is also an outfielder. He's in high A this year. I think it's possible that in a year or two we'll have starting outfielders just as good as Jones and Benson, although it was amazing that Jones had 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in fewer at-bats than any player in history.

As for Yainer Diaz, hey, we have Bo, but I would love to see those two share the DH/C job. The Guardians vastly overrated Myles Straw. They also tend to put a huge value on defense at the catching position, which is probably why they were willing to let Diaz go. The narrator said his defense was a work in progress at the time of the trade.

I think the Guardians are starting to move away from the idea that they are fine with zero offensive production from catcher and center field as long as the defense is great. That seemed to be the thinking behind the Straw trade - get a Gold Glove center fielder while giving up a defensively challenged catcher.

As for Jones and Benson, these guys had a lot of swing-and-miss going on and at the time the Guardians valued high contact hitters. They're moving away from that philosophy as well.

Yesterday was a good day for the FO, not much done by the Ex-Guards:

Franky Lindor: Ofer-4
Harold Ramirez: 1fer-4
Yandy Diaz: 1fer-4
Yainer Diaz: deemed unplayable by the Astros
Nolan Jones: 2 Ks
Will Benson: 1K
Enyel De Los Santos: failed to record a K
Josh Bell: 0fer-3
Robbie Grossman: 0fer-2

Also, does anyone know why baseball reference shows Enyel making 11.5m this year? I'm assuming it's 1.5m?

He's making $1.16m

The Athletic has a column where they list ten reactions to the start of the season and whether they hold water or not. Here's the one on Lindor.

9. Age and decline have caught up with Francisco Lindor, who has gotten off to a slow start.

OVERREACTION

Lindor hit .145 in spring training over 61 plate appearances and started the regular season by going 1-for-31, which has some Mets fans concerned that he’s in decline. Nonsense! It might seem like Lindor is getting old because he’s played a decade in the majors, but he’s only 30 and still in his prime years. He finished ninth in the NL MVP voting in each of the past two years and won a Silver Slugger Award last year after hitting 31 home runs and stealing 31 bases. He’s just off to a slow start — nothing more, nothing less. Relax and chill, Mets fans, he’ll be fine. (And for what it’s worth, he went 2-for-5 with a home run and a double Sunday against the Reds.)

Will Benson will be an interesting guy to watch this year. Avg at .225, OBP less than .300 at the moment, but OPS over 1.000. Can he outslug his other stats?
