From MLB.com:
Opening Day is only a few weeks away, yet a blockbuster trade might be on the horizon.
White Sox right-hander Dylan Cease has been in the discussion of trade rumors since the offseason began and could still be on the move. One possible landing spot? The reigning World Series champions.
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal (subscription required) reported that he heard that the Rangers might be close to acquiring Cease on early Tuesday...Rosenthal added that there are "growing indications" that the White Sox are more serious about trading Cease...
With starters Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer and Tyler Mahle out with injuries to begin the season, the Rangers rotation could be thin until they're at full strength...
Another possible destination for Cease could be with the Yankees, who are reportedly going to be without ace Gerrit Cole for at least a month and possible more due to an elbow injury. A source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand that the Yankees and White Sox were not engaged in active talks regarding Cease as of Tuesday night, but it's possible the Cole news could change that.
The Padres have also been involved in trade talks for Cease...
1. Cease being traded to a contender in another division would help the Guardians, although it would also help the Twins and Tigers, since it would deprive the Sox of their best starter.
2. Even if Cease is traded there are already other contending teams that need a starter, or more than one. Did he say the Padres are in need of a starter? Hmmm.....if Cease doesn't end up in San Diego do you think we could bend them over one more time in exchange for Bieber?
