Guardians find new minority owner

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
As minority owner, Blitzer gets to:
A. Write a big check.
B. Gets to sit in the owners suite.
C. Shake a lot of hands.

Of those, the most important one is part A. That makes our payroll competitive again.

If this means we can extend JRam and Bieber it's a great day IMO. This guy doesn't seem like the type to buy a team looking to move it, so that's good, too. With our front office and minor league pipeline things are looking bright today!

With nothing to back up my opinion - i believe payroll just improved by 20-25 million for 2022 and contract extension talks with JRam, Bieber, Civale and Reyes all have some legs.

A cash infusion will 100% happen now. How much and what for are the ????s. After the initial agreements/contractual obligations are satisfied? Who knows..

Not until an actual ownership transfer is reviewed and approved by the MLB owner will any funds transfer.. perhaps around the all star break at the earliest.. The owners don't want to have a cash infusion from a rich guy being part of the CBA negotiations.. that would be beneficial to only one side...

so, that still means no extensions of Bieber or Jram.. at least not now.. maybe not ever..

One last thing to note:

Blitzer/his investment group is one of many that would have overlooked this opportunity without the name change/rebranding.
Not sure how you can state this absolutely but you’re the closest we have to any insider information so I accept this at face value.

Yea that's kinda long what I've thought. After Chief Wahoo, there just wasn't a good way to market or merchandise the team

Good point although I think your timeline may be a bit stretched out.

The timeline from buying a franchise to getting approval from MLB generally runs from six weeks to three months.

The approval of Cohens purchase of the Mets took six weeks.

Approval for Sherman buying the Royals took two and a half months.

It took about two and a half months for MLB to approve Larry Dolans purchase of the Indians.

This timeline could put approval in the spring training period...dependent upon a deal being finalized.

John Sherman's influence on the Indians was felt before he was approved by MLB in mid August 2016, two weeks after the Andrew Miller trade and the Lucroy non trade, both of which he advised on.

Coming from an oil related industry, Sherman was less risk averse than the average MLB owner/executive.

Am I allowed to say why are some of you shitheads being so damn pessimistic... kind of joking kind of not... lol

Dolans party stated in the past a normal season the Guardians would be around 80-90 max payroll then if you add in a minority owner... during the Sherman years we had over 100 million, so 20ish million as season, so around 100-110 is now our top budget...

@Gson (first part wasn't geared towards you don't worry, but unless you are purposely playing a devil's advocate, you always saying an extension isn't possible kind of ticks me off a bit, not gonna lie...)

So how come the Indians/Guardians franchise has been notorious for signing players to contract extensions and yet you don't believe anyone of high caliber will sign one again? Look at what the Rays just did... Dolan approved that type of contract for Lindor, but he didn't take it... he will approve on again and I think he knows keeping JRam and Bieber are super important... I actually wouldn't be surprised to see JRam, Bieber, Reyes, Civale and Straw get offered some type of extension... Antonetti likes to extend players he feels are apart of the main nucleus of the roster. They signed Kluber, Perez, Gomes, Carrasco, JRam, Kipnis, etc all to a contract extension... offered a record breaking one to Lindor, who didn't take it...

The Guardians FO will offer anyone they think can be apart of this roster long term/nucleus players, contract extensions at a fair value... there isn't any ifs ands or buts about it... now it doesn't mean players will take it, but it will be offered and that's all one can do...

I think realistic is a better word.

It is unreasonable to expect that this franchise with its limited revenue streams is suddenly going to be a middle of the pack spender. Middle of the pack in the last pre covid year was somewhere between $140-$148 mil, depending on how you interpret the numbers.

Going by what we saw previous to the shutdown, that number is going to soar.

Even at an optimistic figure of $100 mil - $110, we will still be a small market team. Payrolls are far more bound by revenue streams than by owner personal wealth.

Jim Pohlad, the principal owner of the Twins is worth about the same as Hal Steinbrenner of the Yanks and a lot more than John Henry of the Red Sox, but the Twins are highly unlikely to ever come
close to matching payrolls of the East
Coast behemoths.

Blitzer is a businessman first and foremost. He is not Santa Claus, diving down the Dolan chimney with a sack full of money to be spent without common sense financial restraint.

Hmmm... simply stated.. I don't play.. devils advocate or any other misguided and misdirected BS you and what this forum's idiot spews..

Let's start with a few notes on your comment..

-Pessimism versus realism.. How many 30-40 MM AAV contracts have you witnessed being signed by the Indians/Guardians? ..
That's right NONE.. not a single fucking one... YOU ARE LYING to yourself to state this is going to happen with Jose Ramirez. YOU DON'T KNOW. No one on this board knows.. and that includes EVERYONE who posts.. (and please, don't tell me or anyone about professing to desire to stay in Cleveland for life.. WHAT ELSE CAN A PLAYER UNDER CONTROL SAY IN ANSWERING THAT QUESTION????????) As an adendum.. name anyone who posts on this site who wants to see Jose Ramirez depart... and make DAMN SURE my name IS NOT ON THAT ANGER / SCAPEGOAT FOCUSED LIST that's designed to make you feel better..

-Budgetary number: TOTAL BULLSHIT.. no such pronouncement of a budget of 80 or 90 or 100 or 110 MM or ANY number has been proferred by Mr. Dolan and or the CleFO.. You are hoping without knowing that that is the number.. Mr. Sherman is not relevant.. by mentioning his name as if that somehow validates your horrifically under cited comment.. makes your anger misplaced and plain stupid..

The extensions that have been signed are typically for players entering into the Arbitration years.. with, perhaps, a year or three post arbitration. It provides the younger players who have shown talent the ability to have some security as they approach free agency. YOU KNOW THIS IS CORRECT.. The few times (Encarnacion?) that an extension was proferred NEVER APPROACHED the numbers EVREYONE IN THE REAL WORLD CAN SEE.. The Guardians haven't participated.. because, they won't or can't.. I D K.. NEITHER does anyone else on this board..

This is the part of your comment that you should apologize over because you know you're lying.....

By changing the context of the comments from signing Jose Ramirez to an extension to any extension.. you're obfuscating the truth and pandering.. just because you and many people want to hear the Guardians are going to offer an extension.. well WHOOP-DEE-FUCKING-DOO !!! An offer that you don't know of or if it exists is what you're hanging onto..unrealistically. OPEN YOUR EYES and EARS.. If you want to know what this team is doing..look at what they've done.. and it isn't signing someone on the wrong side of 30 year olds to 5-10 year extensions for these astronomical numbers.. and everyone who wants to suggest that the next plus 30 MM AAV / 30 plus year old is going to be extended.. needs to stand in the "Drinking Kool-Aid" line..

Record Breaking Deal to Lindor.. only needed 56 % more money added to be equal to what he signed for.. not surpass.. <=== REAL numbers.. not some "uncertain / unknown / should have been enough / BS description of a contract value .. It was a record that he didn't take.... (((([( 218 MM offered - 341 MM signed for ) / 218 MM] * 100 = 56 %))))

Hence.. any suggested or hypothetical deal that's posted at this or any site.. isn't about wanting to see Jose Ramirez leave.. it's about what if.. and nothing more..

Thoughts?..

First off, I know someone said on Twitter that was a legit source/I think someone from the FO said the Indians would normally operate around 80-90 million with Dolan alone... The whole time Sherman was here we had over 100 million pay role...To say we won't be normally in that range during playoff years would 100% know nothing about financial sense... Guardians will operate 80-90 without a minority owner and over that somewhat with one. I don't see how that is unreasonable....

Next, Bieber will not get more than 30 million for the rest of the time with the Guardians under his current contract having an extension guarentees that amount plus more, otherwise another injury will cost him millions.. JRam will not be able to get 30 AAV... He knows it and so does his agent... Why you keep saying he will is ludicrous because of the fact Cleveland doesn't have to pay him over the 24 and let him walk after 24... So you are saying it's 100% any player who is a Cy Young or MVP candidate will always walk cause they will wait til free agency... oh wait Carrasco signed two extensions cause he wanted to make sure his family was taken care of. I guess that doesn't matter here?

My point is that you are so dead set on believing everyone will leave for more money when the Indians/Guardians FO is notorious for signing young players to extensions. They offer anyone they think can be apart of the nucleus a contract extension... lindors was on the table and Lindor publically even stated the Indians offered him one... now yes it was less than what he wanted, but nonetheless the FO is trying to sign guys within its restraints as long as possible in the end... Carrasco got a second extension and with Salvy Perez (who is a small market player with the same agent) got one as well from his club that he took. JRam will be offered a contract extension and it likely will replace his current deal and add more years on with an AAV around 21-25 which is the price he would have made in the next two seasons... he double his money and adds years of guarenteed money. Makes financial sense to be...

Lindor was offered a record breaking deal as a pre-arb player and he didn't take then he was offered another extension, but didn't take it. This FO legitimately tried to keep Lindor... they will legitimately try to keep JRam, Bieber etc...

I feel like you rule it out that the Guardians will ever extend a top player again that's what the problem is. They will extend players... Dolan can run a 80-90 million budget on his own... this isn't make believe, its the honest truth. Now will all players take the extension offers? No they won't, but will offers be made to important players? Yes they will...
