A quick rule of thumb for valuing players (or employees in general) is how upset you’d be if they left.

I rank Ice very high on that basis.

Koby specifically said he drafted Ice because we had offensive players and needed defense. Whatever else can be said about that draft pick there’s no doubt he is a very good defender and versatile in who he can guard. He’s incredibly strong, mobile and coachable.

When he misses games we struggle. (Wade is similar). Most of the NBA media and discussion revolves around counting stats but defense is every bit as important as offense and it doesn’t lend itself to counting stats like offense.

Defense and physicality become more important in the playoffs. Ice will be a valuable rotation playoff player for a very long time. We must keep him

Offense gets you paid, but I value Okoro very high also. His defense is elite, and with the improved shooting, his offense is no longer a liability. He will make less than you is really worth as players who can hit an open shot, defend at elite level but dont "demand" the ball are championship type players.

I hope he gets underpaid in a Cavs uniform as I just dont think he gets more than he deserves. Pay the man a fair contract and move on.

Something I didn't consider going into this series that clicked when I read some Magic forums. Defense. Magic fans are under the impression their defense is better and see the Cavs as a "top 11" team there. While their (regular season) defense may be better, they're underselling the Cavs potential and not accounting for that aspect as one of the primer calling cards of the team. Perhaps it's more fuel for the fire (JA saying they want to hold them to 85 for example) for the team as they're aware Orlando sees themselves as a defense-first squad. Proving Grounds of Basketball Overlords.

Helps the Cavs that they're playing such a bad offensive team;)

They aren't taking injuries into account as well. Cavs still wound up 7th in DEF RTG on the year with Mobley, Wade, and Mitchell all missing quite a few games. Last year the Cavs finished 1st in DEF RTG.

If they had a guard that was a real threat, they'd pose a much larger issue defensively. Right now, if you can contain Banchero or Franz and make sure both of them aren't going off at the same time, the Magic don't appear capable of producing enough offense from their other guys to win a series.

Orlando is probably the playoff opponent/prospective opponent where Okoro is needed the least because they don't really have a backcourt threat. Much more valuable against the other teams we would be likely to see in subsequent rounds.

And I'm not saying that as a slam. I'm saying that to point out why he is valuable even if his value seems less apparent in this particular series.

Makes sense

How is Mobley not?

Interesting that in DPOY voting there tends to be a big man bias, but in this list it’s basically all wings and guards outside of Wemby, Gobert, and BAM. I think the players are voting more for 1-on-1 defenders while the awards look at overall impact on a defense.

I still think Mobley is in the conversation for best 1-on-1 defender in the league.

As soon as a defender draws him, it's game over. Look at the way Cole Anthony just gave up as soon as Mobley was on him.

needs to Shoot more.is it too late to have him switch to pg? Bring the ball up the court, run an offense. Become an Eric snow type. Just think there’s so much potential in him. Just had to be unlocked.

Nowhere near the ball handling skills to become a PG.
