I'm graduating soon..parents said they'd get me a 1,000 dollar gift and then a bunch of money so I figure I'll get a laptop for college and etc...

I dont mind adding in 200 or so if it's the laptop I really want, but I just wanted some advice on good laptops for school and everything.

It'll need some memory for my music and stuff like that..typical HS/College kid needs. Thanks fellas

My advice? Don't get one. They aren't up to date in the times vs the price.

You'd be better off getting a regular computer for that price, it'd be so much better than a laptop. And its harder to steal if you go away to school.

Hmm then what kind of regular computer would you guys recommend? I already have a pretty slick flatscreen monitor.

Im not a MAC fan so i wont recommend that...but there isn't one specific brand that better than the other. Ive had a Compaq that has lasted forever, my EMachines is holding up great too. My school has Dell and they seem to be ok.

It all depends on what is in the system.

Jeesh I just went to the alienware.com website and almost bought a 5,000 dollar computer before I realized I had just tackled my dad and obtained his credit card :uhh:

I don't know.. I bought my sister a Macbook Pro last month, and the girl absolutely flipped over it... She loves it..

I knew nothing about them to be honest.. However, my buddy brought his to work the other day, and I came away extremely impressed with it... I'm thinking about picking one up this weekend..

If I had 2,500 I'd get one for sure.. :( they're expensive as hell for a dude in my situation..

I'd take a laptop over a PC 1000 times over, but I honestly don't know what you can get for $1000. Being able to take your computer with you is a huge advantage. Mac's point about being easier to steal could be a concern in college though.

I have a Dell PC and laptop. Love them both, and would recommend it to anyone. Never had any issues. Support is great if you need it as well.

I have a Dell XPS M140 laptop - paid about $1200 for it and it kicks ass (I got some upgrades - memory, the screen, etc). Its light as hell - people are surprised at how light it is, so carrying it to class would be easy. It is also fairly small in size for a notebook.

My next purchase will definitely be a Mac. Have just heard too many good things about them, and would like to enter that realm when my current laptop becomes outdated.

I think I'm going to get the Mac I'm not positive though..thing is it starts at 1,000 and by the time you're done your at 1500..

I have no idea what my Dell cost. I had no idea they were expensive. But the whole thing about a MAC is that there is virtually no way to get a virus. And that is probably the single most greatest thing about it.

But I prefer a Dell.

I kinda wanna check out Windows Vista and see what all the hub ub is about..

I had an alienware back in 01' when I was a freshman at college and I was really happy with it until it got painfully outdated. I dont like laptops though, just personal preference. They have a lot of slimline towers and mini pods that you can build computers in if you are looking for a small footprint

I've had a virus twice in my life, and I've been on the internet for a looooooong time, all with windows machines. For the most part, you don't get viruses if you're not downloading things from sites you don't trust or opening suspicious email attachments.

Btw, both times I've gotten viruses I was opening suspicious email attachments, like an idiot.
