Larry Hughes has been my number 1 option for awhile. I feel he fits the cavs well. Now, I’m feeling he’s becoming our most logical option this summer. Now, we know all about the redd, and johnson situation so I’ll leave that to your imagination about what’s going on with those 2.
This quote really choked me up...
“After that we would like good character people, people who will give good defensive effort, people who will knock down shots and share the basketball.”
Mike Brown on what cavs needs need to be addressed most. This is a beautiful shout out to Larry Hughes. If you look at the free agent situation, it isn’t very encouraging as far as the top shooting guards go. We really don’t have a guarantee on any of them, and i’ve been saying this awhile, most likely we won’t be able to land any of them, that’s how it is. We all know the mike redd, joe johnson, and ray allen positives and negatives, but Larry hughes seems to be rarely disccussed on this board as a possibility. Most probably assume he’ll automatically resign with washington just because that’s the first place he’s made a home for himself. But, lets remember this is a business, and we all know washington is stuck in this mediocre play off series’, and done until Antawn Jamisons contract comes off the books years from now. They really don’t have an oportunity to greatly increase the talent on their team, and they’re middle of the rung, while the cavaliers have firmly planted themselves in a perfect off season position to improve substantially.
Larry’s has unrestricted status, meaning he can sign with whatever team he desires, with Washington having no control over him. This is contrary to Joe Johnson, which the suns have been reportedly trying to shop Marion to lower there cap to resign Johnson. Joe Johnson could turn out to be the waste of time the cavs don’t need, and it seems phoenix is going to do everything in their power to keep him[there gonna trade frickin’ marion! Could be another mask, however, but if they trade marion they can easily sign johnson and stay out of the red]. We know the situation with redd, and allen, both are going to desire max contracts, and both will prob. get the max. I’m not sure if I want to invest that much into the SG position. Larry will come cheaper than redd/allen/johnson. Not very much in the first year, but over the life of the contract, yes.
What is also interesting is Ira Newble has been pushing for the cavs to look into Hughes, I wonder if Ira has been in Hughes’ ear as well?
Ira, and Hughes are kind of similar players. When Ira was good he was the slashing type, and the defensive stopper, unfortunately he hasn't been what we signed him to be.
Hughes is your typical hot and cold shooter. He's either on or off from the out side. He's a slasher who plays most effectively when driving to the basket, and in the open court. Larry did make 1st team all defense, very impressive, and this is our second need, perimeter defense, a better help defender than man, which is good in a way.
Hughes is my first option on my list, and I think he's attainable. At worst just as attainable as a redd/allen/johnson.
I'm sure most will argue that we need a shooter, but you know what, gives larry hughes a player like lebron to set him up, he'll shoot much better from the out side, just like joe Johnson has since the nash experience.
