Larry Hughes Becoming # 1 Option

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Jus to point out something, if we sign hughes, we'll need complimentary players next to him. It'l be almost a priority to resign Z if we sign hughes, as a player like hughes will work best with a big man who is disciplined. Hughes game over the past few years has been wild, and the teams he's been on have basically been do what you want. hughes will need a set role.

For hughes to also be most effective, we'll need a point guard who can shoot the basketball. Sarunas just jumped to the top of my list. It may also be nice to lure a big man who can shoot, but don't know there are any on the market.

Hughes is mostly the slashing type, so he ould help us with play making duties, as was a big rpoblem last year, no one besides lebron and Z could create shots.

Bah I forgot about this thread. Heres my post from the other thread.

"Im starting to warm up to getting Hughes. His contract negotiation with the Wiz are supposedly not going well. And I dont think theyre willing to give him the max. Hes not the gratest shooter though. We could sign Saras and Donny Marshall to go along with Hughes. Then trade Drew for something good.
Pg-Saras, Snow
Sg-Hughes, Luke, Ira
Sf-LBJ, Sasha
Pf-Donny, Av
C-Z, trade
Looks pretty well balanced to me."
I do think Hughes for the max is way too much though, but well have to give it to him because were desperate. I mainly dont like giving him big money because hes a shot chucker and is injury prone.

I would be very happy if we could get Larry Hughes in here. He has had injuries but most of that was early in his career. He can shoot, slash AND play team defense. I think he played with Snow on the Sixers too but I can't find what their stats as a backcourt tandem were.

That being said, he's 80/20 going to resign with Washington. :banghead:

Joe Johnson isn't going to leave Phoenix either, not after they dumped Q specifically to resign him. I think he would take under max money easy, just to stay where he's at. JJ suffered with Boston before finding his niche with the Suns. He doesn't want to leave.

Voshon Lenard is washed up, I don't think he could impact this team if Lucious Harris couldn't. I mean Wesley Person stepped in and made a bigger impact than Lenard on the Nuggets.

So let's keep haggling with Hughes and see what happens.

hate to be a downer, but hughes will probably resign with washington and the suns will match Johnson as well and we'll be stuck with a 2nd level free agent and it would have to be considered a dissapointing offseason...typical cleveland. It is beyond me how we have all this money, cap room, Lebron, and still can't get anyone to come here...only here would this happen.

The Cavs do need to go hard after Hughes now and I'm sure they already are. There does seem to be an opening there to get him with some reports of Hughes not being totally happy in Washington or with the Wizards contract offer. Since Hughes is unrestricted we can just go out and sign him without worrying about matching offers. The Wizards already have Jamison with a max contract and Arenas getting $10 million a year. Hughes isn't a sure signing but we need to go all out after him now.

If Hughes also doesn't come than the Cavs should throw huge money at Johnson and dare the Suns to match. If it gets to this point than the Cavs can afford to take the chance and wait the 7 days to see if Phoenix matches. The earliest the Cavs could sign Johnson to an offer sheet would be July 22 so a final decision would come July 29 or 30 at the earliest.

Hughes isn't the shooter we wanted but in the long run he might end up being a better pick then Redd.

He's a better ballhandler, can create his shot easier, and plays better D. With Mike Brown coaching a tandem of Lebron and Hughes coudl develop into a real terror in terms of passing lanes and the like. Both are long, athletic, and quick. With the right coaching our defense could significantly improve.

We would then need to swith our sight from A. Daniels if Hughes is signed to someone like Damon Joens as we'd need shooting

Im sad to say this but i really doubt we will be able to sign Hughes, i mean he plays with his friends in washington and they already have a wining team, i mean cmon guys think reasonably...

Redd is done no need mentioning him ever again unless we are playing them he isn't coming he won't be coming it's done and over with. We can max offer to JJ but if Hughes and Simmons get snatched up and they match we can kiss this offseason and LeBron James goodbye, We should try to get hughes and Simmons have hughes run some point and some sg bron at sf simmons sub for them and deal pav or jackson with gooden for a defensive oriented pf like chandler..

I just really hope Hughes is continueing to work on his shooting and isn't being complacent about his breakout season. I am not a big fan of Larry, but I do see his adavantages in that he is a rather flexible player (can cover 3 spots). If, and that a massive if, we get Hughes, it is imperative that we get a shooter who can man the point guard role. Saruanus is that guy.

One plus I belive to is, I think Hughes would love the extra attention of playing with LeBron. He comes accross as a guy who digs attention.

What happened to Hughes shooting over the years? I was looking at his playerfile and he was shooting a good 37% from 3 in the 02-03 season, then the next season he still had a decent percentage at 34%. Then last season it drops way down to 28%. If he can shoot like he used to a couple years ago he could be a great fit.

Hughes become more sure of his shooting and bombed at random rather then waiting for the right moments he did on 02/03. He should get plenty of space to bring that shooting back up, but he should never be relied upon to hit the big 3.

I would be excited about Hughes here because, unlike Redd, he gives a very good effort to play D.

I dont beleive it would take the max to get ihm here either.

Hopefully we can get this nailed out quick.

You think if Redd gets offered the max that Hughes is going to get offered any less considering that overall hes a more rounded player? I think Hughes uses that "unhappy" business to work the market a bit and gets the $72 mill offer the Cavs gave Redd. Then Washington has to turn around and give the guy 6 years/$94, making him the 3rd shooting guard to be overpaid this off season. They did make it into the 2nd round of the playoffs this year, but I think thats about as far as they can go with that team and their money tied up paying off their big 3. I would love to see Hughes in a Cavs uniform, but hes really been known as the least likely of the 4 shooting guards to leave.

Our attention then turns to JJ, but the Suns, as mentioned before, aren't going to let both Q and JJ go, even if they did sign Raja Bell and are looking into Finley with Jim Jackson waiting in the wings. So then our money gets tied up for 7 days and the Suns are stuck paying the luxury tax.

That leaves Simmons and Mobley, now both of these guys dont deserve anything near the max, and hopefully it wont take more than 6 mill or so to get them, outbidding the teams that offer the MLE. The only team with any real money to get into a bidding war with is Atlanta, who will probably overpay for the one we dont sign. They don't really excite me that much, but either of the two should be able to put up 15 a night from the SG spot and they can both shoot, giving the starting rotation another viable scoring option beside LeBron and hopefully Z.

Korver is interesting, one dimensional like Redd but I think a better shooter. He'd also add to an already huge pile of swingman types. Theres also Antonio Daniels and Vlad Rad from Seattle who would be interesting too. We could probably land SAR with more money than lots of other teams, but there hasn't been any buzz at all about this possibility.

Hughes will not leave DC. He is only doing this so he can get more money from the Wiz thats all. Its not gonna happen. DC wont let it happen and there hasnt been anything in the Washington Post about it. The Wizards are to good, Arenas, Jamison and Hughes will play together for a while.

Im not a hughes fan at all but I would take him rather than nothing. His injuries are a big concern, the guy seems to consistantly miss 15-20 games a season. I also hear of a disapearing act in the playoffs. He doesnt shoot the three ball very well and he takes a lot of bad shots. On the upside he is a greath athlete, defender, passer and he can put the ball in the hole. he is too similar to bron though for me, he needs the ball in his hands to be effective while guys like joe johnson and michael redd can be effective either way.

I say we give our max allowable offer to Joe Johnson(5 year 72 million). I hear that Phoenixes offer to Joe was 6 year 60 million. Our extra 12 million with one less year and an opt out clause could be just enough to let joe leave. I here they have just signed raja bell and already have jim jackson as well as barbosa who can play the two guard. If the deal is matched, tehre is a good chance that hughes will still be available as well as simmons and mobley.
