In my mind, splitting Pilk and Morris and Civale was more important because you would hope in those games that we would have been in a situation where we can pull them after a few innings and still be in the game to use your ballpen to see what happens. The issue with Gaddis/Curry (or even Bibee or any other AAA arm coming up fresh for a game) is more than likely, they will give up 4+ runs in 3 innings and thus by the time you take them out, the game got out of hand. As long as you have a long man like McCarty (and then Curry) to eat up a lot of innings, you are not using much if any of your pen (Gaddis for 4 and McCarty for 4 is what 1 inning?) as you conceded game.
Unfortunately, as CATS said, this was going to happen at some point. The issue with some point being today is that with no McCarty ready (due to pitch count from Tues), and THUS you are using the middle part of your pen which is what you exactly were trying to avoid (luckily Shaw didn't struggle much and hopefully neither does Morgan where 30+ pitches may sit them for more than 1 day). Yet, you still haven't split Pilk and Morris and actually speed up the return of Civale instead of getting another game off for the pen with McK and Quant on Monday Tuesday after a long weekend.
But, I guess I am overreacting and beating a dead horse. So, I am out as I got to take me kid to the drs.
