I don't think the intent was, "we care that he's gay". Mine certainly wasn't. But yes, my very first take away from the article was an immediate, "Dude's gay". I feel bad for the kid if that is indeed the case. Such an elaborate fantastical story to cover up his sexuality.

He's not going to come out smelling like roses, after all of this. Any way the truth is told, he's going to look bad. I think it's just a very sad situation. If this turns out to be a "Catfish" sitituation (which I find it hard to believe)... but when you toy with someone's dignity/heart/feelings, it's beyond evil. And I see where people will give those Catfished people grief: "You should have known better.... You never met her/video chatted?" etc.

He said he met her several time, but is now saying they never met. His family said she flew to Hawaii to meet up with him, but now that story has changed as well.

While I agree his story does not add up, I don't view it in the realm of impossibility. I would think if his dad wanted paid, he could get paid in many other ways. Look at Scam Newtons family, Reggie Bush's family, OJ Mayo, ect...

The way I see it is that there are two possibilities.

1. He believed she was real and elaborated meeting her because he was embarrassed that he had an internet gf he never met. But this doesn't explain why his dad claimed to have met her. It's also weird if he made up the story about falling asleep with her on the phone. Why add that detail?


2. He was in on the hoax. But what's the end game? A nice touching story for the Heisman?
