Anyone know what happened to Petey Halpin? I presume an injury.
So how bad is our minor league hitting?? Akron has THE lowest BA for all the conferences that we are in (.188). Yet, this is due to a few things.
1) We just have a hole in our system where Columbus #3 of 20 team in OPS and Lake County and Lynchburg are #5 of 12 - on average our farm systems have a perfectly average OPS when comparing their conferences together on OPS
2) When you look at our average age of this team for hitters, it is 22.6. Just scrolling through the other teams in Eastern AA, they are usually high 23 and even up to 25 for average age. Hartford is next youngest at 23.2 (rest then are over 23.5+). And, if it wasn't for our catching depth of Amditis, Berglund, Cadwell and Lavastida, we would be much younger.
3) Our Latin Scouting has taken a toll and getting pouched if I recall over the years. Our 2017 class was phenomenal if you only count Valera and Rocchio (let alone Noel, Tena and Planez). Yet, our classes after that until recently has taken a toll (cannot win them all but will take 1 great class every 2-3 years). And, when the entire 2021 draft class is pitching, there were no hitters to back fill the system (especially trading Junior too).
2018 (not bad) - Martinez, Frias, Rodriquez and Sanquintin (top-2 big names didn't payoff yet)
2019 (not high upside but okay) - Antunez, Collado, Benjamin, Pastrano, Durango (again big names didn't pay off especially when the others are held back due to COVID)
Jan 2021 - starting to look good with Mejias (who is struggling but is one of youngest in A ball) and Genao (injured like the rest of our hitters in Valera, Boyd and DeLauter).
Now, looking at our pitching, (Columbus 4th of 20, Akron 6th of 12, LC 12th of 12 and Lynchburg 8th of 12th) - that would be the bigger problem if we were not so top loaded. And with many of our 2021 pitchers in LC - that should have been loaded team but mediocre performance by Mace and Johnston (who was Bimbo break out contender mid-year last season) and others like Denholm and Davenport.

Don't know what, but he was struggling the last few games he played and was put on 7-day IL

Something to do with his throwing arm... All I saw was right arm soreness... I haven't seen anything else.

At this point I'm wondering if our farm system really matters outside of a few key players like Valera, Rocchio, Freeman, Bo Naylor, Espino, Cantillo, Hankins, Williams, Campbell, Morris, and possibly Noel.
We have so many young players already on the Guardians who are either locked into long term deals or won't be eligible for free agency for several years. Just go down the lineup; Kwan, Straw, Brennan, Oscar, Jose, Gimenez, Arias, Freeman, Naylor - they all will be Guardians for years. Bo Naylor is poised to take over at catcher. Valera may be starting in the outfield by next season or sooner.
The starting pitching is ridiculous even if Bieber is traded; McKenzie, Quantrill, Civale, Allen, Bibee, and Battenfield are on the Guardians now with Williams and Cantillo coming on fast. Hankins is back and Morris is throwing against hitters. Espino is out but will be back in a year. In the bullpen we have Clase signed long term, plus Karinchak, Stephan, Hentges, DLS, Morgan, Sandlin, Curry - all young pitchers and I expect Morris will end up being a reliever as well.
We really don't need a lot of help from the farm system over the next 3-5 years IMO, just a few key guys who have already been identified. And when Bieber gets traded we'll surely end up with a couple more unless they do a Pablo Lopez for Luis Arraez type trade and move him for an established power bat, which isn't a bad idea.

I was thinking the same thing. Been thinking about doing a depth chart for the draft and where the holes are ... and there is not that many. You will need some depth here and there, more so for trading for that final piece or two like we did in 2016. Yet, we have a few nice pieces like Martinez, DeLauter, etc that fill in that middle area that teams will want in 1-2 years.
Also, don't sleep on Lava, you all. He has the defensive skills to play in MLB already (hopefully fine tuning it now). And, Tito has shown, the bat don't matter. Yet, it is that bat that we are all disappointment with. Yet, even with 10-days off, he is in a 10-31 streak. Still early, but they do push their prospects and sometimes it is too much but they will hopefully learn from their stumbles (like his last year).
