New TV Series to watch

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I swear I get sucked in to loving shows that I have no business loving. I must have checked out season 1 of Shadow and Bone on Netflix at some point last year because when I saw season 2 dropped a couple weeks ago, before playing episode 1, I noticed I had previously watched like 10 minutes of it. I either forgot about it or those first 10 minutes didn’t grab me initially. But after downloading the first 4 episodes of the series to watch on a flight to Cleveland for my brother’s 50th birthday, I have binged all but the remaining 4 episodes of season 2 resuming the moment I stepped on my return flight to Phoenix.

It boggles my mind that I knew nothing of the books or the Netflix series. At 48 years of age, my favorite reading (when I can still find the time) are YA and mature sci-fi/fantasy book series particularly futuristic or alternate world settings like the Red Rising series or the Lotus War trilogy. You add in steampunk and gothic elements and I’m hooked bad.

I am not ashamed to say Shadow and Bone has sucked me in with it gorgeous young actors and actresses perfectly cast in their respective roles. The use of so many storytelling elements has kept my interest in every way and there is a little something for everyone. Science-based magic, martial arts, horror, gun fighting, narrative plan initiation, even mobster action among many others. Even the cheesy romantic elements that were most likely added to attract the attention of the young adult demographic may be my favorite aspect, which pains me to say since my old, err, I mean middle aged ass, probably has no business enjoying it as much as I do.

Seriously, anyone into science fiction or fantasy should really check this show out. It’s absolutely a whole lot of fun thanks to the characters these actors and actresses have created.

Yellowjackets Season 2 premiere was good, but...seeing random new characters in the wilderness was incredibly disappointing. Having new "extras" is one thing (Lost was notorious for this) but having brand new characters with speaking roles seemingly "spawning" out of nowhere is really absurd and disappointing.

I mean, they gotta eat someone.

I really hope these new characters are just hallucinations by Misty and others, but that's probably wishful thinking.

Also, they gotta chill with the dog stuff..

Yeah the JV thing is hilarious. It's not like Lost where you have a huge beach and the extras could be anywhere, they are all crammed into a small cabin and we didn't even see them before? And hey, it's TV but either give them a reason to be there or don't feed them the worst lines in the show.

Episode 2 was a huge one, I think they pulled off the big moment well. And I have to say I'm stoked to see the amatuer detectives storyline play out, Ricci is my favorite on the show and I adore Elijah Wood.

Then eat someone that matters. Make it mean something. Not some fake newly spawned character. It's just cheating the story.

I assume they’ll be eating a whole lot of people before this show is done.

Probably, but then they should have had more people on the plane and in the show from the beginning.

Anyway, Episode 2 introduced it the right way.

I want to read the books before I the series, but I have not seen audiobooks available for this series by Leigh Bardugo. I have read the Ninth House which deals with secret societies and magic which I enjoyed. The 2nd book just released, Hell Bent, and is on my waitlist to be read.

Good to hear that there is a second season and that might move this up on my to read and watch list.

I don't know what it is about this show but my mind wanders everytime I try to watch it. It says I watched the whole first season but I can't remember any details. This seems like a show I should like. I think something about the audio just makes me tune it out. Its utterly weird.

Just finished a rewatch of The Sopranos. I finally watched it for the first time last year. Like any excellent show, you definitely catch more things the second time around.

ETA: tried to add more thoughts about the finale but the site won’t allow including a spoiler tag on mobile.

I'll keep my response as vague as possible. I'd imagine if I had watched that finale live I'd have been pissed like many people. But since I watched the Sorpranos way after the fact and knew how it sort of ended I was able to catch foreshadowing that made me appreciate it more.
