(No Longer) Joe Woods’ Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Togiai was elite last season...can't remember the last time OSU had a DT that good. Think if he got a full season (12-15 games) he would have been drafted much sooner. Of the draftable OSU players this year, Togiai was my favorite for the Browns from a fit and value perspective...I was truly hoping the Browns would grab him in the 4th and that's exactly what they did.

Don't be surprised if he ends up starting before too long. At the least I expect he'll be getting a significant number of snaps.

I am really glad @Jordan is digging in a little with the defensive line. After OTAs I saw Browns fans gushing about the quickness up front in drills.

I believe it's too soon to know how well this experiment will go.

Malik Jackson is going to be an important bridge between the coaches and the players. -He played well under Woods in Denver and Andrew Berry saw him as the missing piece for the Eagles in 2019. He earned that respect because he could play every position on the line. Unfortunately, Jackson only played one game as an Eagle due to an injury. Will the Browns get a healthy Malik Jackson? Can he regain what he was before that injury? The jury is out.

Billings is not in playing shape, Woods says as much at the end of the interview I posted. It felt like the elephant in the room nobody wanted to bring up until the end.

This group has some players with injury histories at key positions. I don't know if Clowney and Takk will play in every game. The younger players like Togiai and Elliott have an important role stepping up throughout the season.

Marvin Wilson's FSU film before his senior year is damn near elite too. He's a total mystery but also one of the guys I am most excited to hear about. I feel our coaching staff coupled with the players on the D-line should be able to get the most out of him if he comes mentally ready to work.

I think we should use Myles allot more than we do at DT. He is big and a complete physical freak that would dominate allot like Donald does. Nothing is a bigger disruptor than pressure up the middle.

I see what you are saying but the thought process here was simple: putting MG in the middle means he's walking right into a double-team. I think going forward, we'll see what you're hoping to see more often because now we've got 2 DE's besides MG who have a history of winning 1 on 1 matchups.

The more you look at the roster on both sides of the ball, the less excuses I find. Besides (the given) potential injuries to key players at key times, it's put up or shut up this year: my expectation is that we're legitimate contenders.

Marvin Wilson was a great buy low. I wrote a lot of interest before the draft on FSU players dropping. There was a huge turnover in the coaching tree at Florida State, moving on from Taggert to former Memphis coach Mike Norvell. Norvell is an offensive mind and brought over his DC, who failed to connect with the carryover talent in the room. All those highly rated recruits had new roles and didn't adapt, planning to leave for the NFL or transfer.

Wilson was a big three tech who was pushed to nose tackle, and seemed to wear down. He didn't like holding position instead of attacking. The coaches need to build up his confidence again as well as teaching techniques.

“He is a grown man. He is strong,” Woods said. “Obviously, he has size, but he is very strong. I think he was a powerlifter in high school. I have talked to him, he said he is not as strong as he could be, but he said give him a month and he will be back to squatting 900 pounds. I do not think he is in the ideal football shape that he wants to be in. Again, that is why you go through OTAs, summer working out and come back in training camp just to get yourself where you need to be. He is definitely part of our plans. Definitely a first- and second-down run-stuffer type of player. I am excited about him. He has a great personality and fits in great with the guys. He will definitely play a role for us this season.”

The bolded is what I referred to earlier. Everything Woods talks about is very positive, then the part about Billings had some buried caveats. He very well could get it together before the season, he has time.

Did anyone else involuntarily gag when they got to that part?

The fat fuck had nearly a year and a half to get in shape, and he shows up looking like like he ate Ogunjobi.

To beat the man, you have to eat the man.

I still don't think Billings will make the team. The 2 rookies, and the 2 Maliks I think are in. Clowney can go inside or out.

How good was Billings when he was in shape? I didn't even know he was an ex-Bengal until a few weeks ago.

The guy looks like he didn't do a shred of conditioning from his last game played on December 29, 2019 until whenever that photo was taken. That kind of indolence can do damage to your body that can't be overcome in just a month.

"Not playing this year, I am scared of COVID" - totally legit.

Comes back to camp massively out of shape? Better be careful when be so heavy when you're walking on thin ice.

BUT - dude can squat 900 pounds so let's see what he's made of. Before I judge him - COVID was hard and people cope in different ways. Yes he could have been eating pizza and ice cream, but maybe he was doing so as a coping mechanism.

We'll see. Holding pattern on Billings until further notice. Maybe being back around the guys will change his head and his body.
