(No Longer) Joe Woods’ Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
"Not playing this year, I am scared of COVID" - totally legit.

Comes back to camp massively out of shape? Better be careful when be so heavy when you're walking on thin ice.

BUT - dude can squat 900 pounds so let's see what he's made of. Before I judge him - COVID was hard and people cope in different ways. Yes he could have been eating pizza and ice cream, but maybe he was doing so as a coping mechanism.

We'll see. Holding pattern on Billings until further notice. Maybe being back around the guys will change his head and his body.
I think Billings could easily be the worst of our DTs that are competing for a spot.

I also don't think we have anyone who duplicates his skillset. I know we have guys who can play limited snaps as a nose, but if we want someone who can play that run stuffing, big, 2-gap 1-tech, I don't see another guy on the roster who does that.

So, just for DC versatility, I think he makes the roster unless he legit can't play at an NFL level.

I think judging people for how they cope with adversity is perfectly fair. We certainly tend to admire those who overcome it.

That's a fair point. A slippery slope of a discussion, but a fair point. I am just saying I have no idea what he did or didn't go through, what his headspace is then/now, etc.

He either makes the team or he doesn't. I certainly don't admire him for showing up that way, I guess I am just saying there's an asterisk by my usual assumption that this is lazy and shows a lack of commitment. That's my baseline but I am not holding fast to my opinion.

I guess I would be more accepting if one of his main responsibilities required to do his job wasn't to be in good physical shape. The guy's an athlete.

Tough for me to feel bad if he gets cut because he let himself go during quarantine. I let myself go too but I sit on a couch and talk to clients on the phone all day.

If Ted Washington can have a 16 year career, I wouldn't count Billings out. At 6', 315lbs coming out of Baylor, Billings never looked like an athlete, but he tested well in speed and agility drills, and is dominant in power and strength. As stated, no other dt on the roster does what he does. Hes meant to be an anchor, not play in space. Its possible the time off let him unravel to the point he's no longer viable, but there are a lot of interior lineman who excel with similar bodies. Ogunjobi looked great in the uniform, but played like crap. The Malik's, Marvin, Tobias, Elliott, and the rest all have question marks, but they all need to succeed to keep Billings off the roster.

Yeah, I learned my lesson getting hyped over Ogunjobi's physique and getting fooled into thinking he'd be tossing guys around.

Not only is Billings going to make the team, he's going to be the starting nose tackle.

I would be absolutely shocked if he isn't out there week 1, snap 1.

Except we run a 4-3 which doesnt have a nose tackle, but I agree he starts at defensive tackle.

Billings can improve his conditioning, but he's a nose tackle, not a men's underwear model.

Here are some other recent players who played that position for the Browns.
