(No Longer) Joe Woods’ Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Not a good look for Ward deflecting blame here. I was hoping this blame game shit would go away with Baker, but I suppose it is possible this team still has some growing up to do.

I think there's a difference between "I was playing the flat" and "I was responsible for the flat"

I'm going to go with MKC's Tweet because she's usually reliable and she is using quotes.

The first means that he could have been playing the wrong thing. The second means he's insisting he was doing what he's supposed to be doing.

Either way, it's splitting hairs. I'm not liking what I'm seeing, and it sucks because Ward is one of the best press-man cover guys in the league.

I guess...

Ward clearly thinks he did nothing wrong though.

Another one of his exact quotes was "it wasn't my coverage", so regardless of the semantics of him playing the flat versus being responsible for the flat, he certainly is convinced he wasn't supposed to be deep.

Ultimately it doesn’t really matter whose fault it was because it was embarrassing.

Response should simply be it can’t happen and we gotta make sure it doesn’t happen again. You don’t blame others.

Disappointed in our 100 million dollar leaders.

I think Denzel is putting the blame much more on Woods than he is on Delpit.

The players pretty clearly have no idea where the fuck they're supposed to be half the time - that is 100% an indictment on Joe Woods.

This secondary is way too damn talented for receivers to be running around wide open as consistently as they are.

Looking at this play, it's entirely possible Ward DID have the flat as his responsibility, but carried on #84 because #83 had a delayed route (chipping on Myles). After seeing JOK (perhaps in a roaming role) close in on the flat, he may have carried even more while still expecting help over the top.

Or maybe he just didn't know the play call... AND STILL DOESN'T. Which would be pretty bad. I don't think he's flat out lying - he seems to really believe his responsibility was the flat.

The reason for this, of course, is because it's indefensible to have your #1 corner covering the flat in this situation when you should be playing PREVENT defense.

Not sure why people are making this more difficult than it needs to be. Ward and/or Delpit fucked up. If they didn’t, there wouldn’t have been a WR running wide open and no one within 25 yards of him.

I’m not a huge fan of Woods, but maybe that play gets shut down if the players execute, or at least the WR is tackled (in bounds preferably) and the Jets have to work to store that first TD. Again, we probably could’ve been in a different defense given the situation, but Delpit and Ward didn’t have a WR in their vicinity on that play. As much as I dislike Woods, I can pretty much guarantee whatever defense he called didn’t tell Ward/Delpit to not account for a WR streaking down the middle of the field.

With the way they were playing on the opposite side of the field, it just looks like Ward fucked up. Otherwise, wouldn’t it be likely that Emerson was in the flat as well?

If two guys are this badly confused about who is supposed to be doing what, doesn't that fall on coaching?

In this case, I don’t think so. Those guys aren’t rookies, nor are they new to the team. They’ve played plenty of NFL football. They’ve played for the same D co-ordinator for multiple years. Everyone else knew what they were supposed to be doing. The odds of whatever play being run in that situation being some new scheme they’ve never ran is slim-to-none.

Likely more of a case of players losing focus thinking the game was over and not really paying attention to play calls if I had to guess.

Honestly, the worst part of that whole play was Delpit and Ward just loafing, watching the ball float in the air when they both recognize no one is covering the WR. Ward is only 6-7 yards behind the WR when they both come into the screen (after ball had been thrown). The ball was under thrown, and it’s entirely possible that one of them could run down Davis had they made any effort at all.

It was happening throughout the game, though. JOK and Delpit were arguing in one play on a 3rd and 8 completion. There was a 3rd and 4 (about 7 minutes left to go) where Emerson and Harrison both took the same guy and Garrett Wilson simply dropped the wide open pass, leading to a Jets punt.

Then after the Brissett sack on the Jets next drive Flacco wildly overthrew Corey Davis towards the sideline on a 3rd and 8, where Newsome + Emerson screwed up the communication and both took the flat. Jets punted with 2 and a half minutes left, we came down and scored.

There are other moments throughout the game too. Our defense was completely clueless.

Read between the lines. Denzel Ward is not blaming Grant Delphit. He's putting the heat on Joe Woods for his play calling. Even if Denzel Ward was blaming Delphit, he did it in a way where he sounds more disappointed in the coaching for either not correcting a player who has blown a few big plays already or for continuing to put that player and the team in that situation.

I don't think there's any beef between Ward and Delphit. I think it's clear that none of the DB's are comfortable with the communication with the play calling and coverage. That's coaching bruhs.

This is the equivalent to our O-Line arguing about protections after giving up multiple sacks. Each guy knows their assignment but is it the right assignment? Are the calls that are coming in right for that situation? Cover 2 up 13 with under 2 minutes left? Playing a soft zone on Joe Flacco the entire game? Continuing to rely on getting pressure with your front four after Clowney went down with an injury and you are gassing Myles Garrett who is already getting chipped, double, and even triple teamed? Calling plays that do not get you off the field on 3rd down?

Is there anyone on this board who actually trusts this defense to get a big stop when it's absolutely needed? I doubt it, and that's a huge indictment of coaching with as much talent as we've got on that end of the ball. Joe Woods needs to go back to being a position coach, because he obviously can't hack it as a DC.
