Off-Season Trade Ideas Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I agree with what Max said earlier in another thread

I like the idea of going after Elton Brand...Duke guy

I agree, I absolutely love the idea of Brand in Cleveland. Unfortunately, I just don't see it happening due to the structure of his contract -- after the season he has a player option for one more year. The Brand situation will shake out in one of three ways, none of which is conducive to a trade with the Cavs:

1) EB exercises his option
2) EB opts out, Clips sign-and-trade him
3) EB opts out, signs elsewhere as UFA

If EB exercises his option, then he becomes an expiring contract already. Therefore, it makes no sense for the Clippers to trade him for expiring contracts. If they trade Brand, they will be looking for young talent or nice draft picks in return. The value of our trade assets lies in fact that they're expiring contracts, so a trade here makes little sense. Andy is a young talent, but he's nothing more than an expiring contract to the Clippers, since AV is a lock to opt out and Sterling would never fulfill AV's contract demands. If we to trade for Brand, it'd likely cost us AV + Boobie + draft picks at the very least.

If EB opts out and the Clips want to sign-and-trade him, then once again, expiring contracts in return make no sense. Why go through the trouble of a sign-and-trade for expirings when you can just let him walk? I suppose that this scenario would give us slightly more leverage in trade talks than the previous scenario since EB has forced the Clips to trade him or lose him for no compensation. However, there will likely be much better trade offers out there for the Clips to choose from.

If EB opts out and signs elsewhere as a UFA, then we're shit outta luck since we're over the cap.

That being said, nothing is impossible. However, the only way we'd have a shot at landing EB (unless Brand demands a trade to Cleveland) would be to pay up big time. As good a fit as EB would be, it doesn't make sense from our perspective. Our primary objective is to maximize our trade assets, which requires finding trade partners who: a) have a piece that would benefit us, and b) would value expiring contracts more than this piece that benefits us. The situation with EB does not fit this mold. However, given Sterling's cheap ass, I would be interested in seeing if he would like to dump Kaman's contract, which goes for another 4 years and $43M after this season.

Perhaps there's a hole in my reasoning, but I honestly don't see how this happens. I'd love to hear from Max or a couple other guys who have been pimping EB if they have any ideas as to how this could work out in case I'm missing something.

Wally's contract is going to be key next year... I don't see us getting a Gasol but someone will become available...

Yeah, there is 0 chance the clips dump Brand for expiring deals and late picks..

Getting something for Wally next year is probably our best chance to get that piece that makes us a legitimate title contender..

If LeBron goes to NY, then it doesn't matter who the Cavs trade for.

David Stern wants LBJ out of Cleveland.

TheKid is absolutely right. David Stern will do everything he possibly can to get LeBron out of Cleveland and into a big market. Somewhere like LA, NY, maybe Dallas or Detroit.

Sorry guy, wrong section..-PIP

Well we can trade $24 million in expirings next season of Damon, Wally and Snow. So that's good. That and a few draft picks could net us an all-star. Maybe Shawn Marion?

Also...Trading Up in the draft would be nice as well.

Marion will be in his last year... so expirings won't get him.

And if PHX does tank, they'll probably be building around Amare, so I doubt he'd be available.

I still say Redd and Carter are the most likely options with Dirk and JJ as darkhorses (depending on how their teams fare in the playoffs). Marion, Brand and Arenas will all be in the the final year of their deal, so they'd have to trade more than just expiring contracts (and with Kaman playing so well, I doubt the Clips view him as a poor contract)

What about Sergio Rodriguez? He's just rotting in the Blazers bench but in this team, if he's good enough to topple West, Sergio may even start. I honestly could see him as a Beno-type player on the Cavs but with better passing.

I know it's damn near impossible but can you imagine Arenas and LBJ.....

Redd does seem like a more realistic and viable option though. With our expiring contracts (If Wally doesnt pick it up, I dont see him keepin on the wine and gold for long) and trading chip in Andy, That would probably be our best bet in improving the team and keepin 23 happy

operation get michael redd in cleveland starts now

Any chance that we could get Redd and Bogut if we take on Gadzuric's and Simmons awful contracts as well. That's a lot of money saved for the Bucks. For Redd and Bogut, I might even add Bell's awful contract as well.

We'd have to give up nearly all our expirings to do it (Wally, Snow, Jones, and Smith) but it would be worth it

it worked in nba live. but they took on big bens contract.

Hey what about getting ricky davis back in cleveland.

I don't think you will be able to get anyone with an expiring contracts with expiring contracts. if that team wants the cap space more then they want players then why not just let their own player play out the season and walk? if it is a guy who uses his ETO a sign and trade including his some expirings might work.

to me a couple teams to watch when it comes to trades

Atlanta-they have to get Josh Smith resigned and also have Josh Childress who will be a RFA. will they re-sign both? can there ownership mess allow them to re-sign Smith to big money and keep both Johnson and Bibby?

Chicago-I don't see them as a team the Cavaliers would be trading with but it doesn't look like this mix of players is going to get it done. I am sure they would love to move Hinrich and they have to make a decision on Ben Gordon and Luol Deng who will be a RFAs.

Denver-AI has an ETO, does he want out of Denver? while he and Melo are a nice 1-2 scoring punch it is clear Iverson won't be winning a title in Denver. would he take less to go somewhere he feels he can win now? will the Nuggets take expirings and picks for AI and try to build a different way?

Golden State-Baron Davis has an ETO plus Ellis and Biedrins are RFAs. I am sure they want all 3 back but can they realistically bring all of them back. maybe some would say Biedrins is a low priority but they are already so thing down low that they went out and signed Chris Webber so what happens without Biedrins? Pietrus and Barnes are also FA at then end of the year.

Indiana-they have been a mess for a while. O'Neal has an ETO and it seems like both are ready to part ways.

LA Clippers-Brand and Maggette both have ETOs that may lead to sign and trades

Memphis-they still have Mike Miller who will draw interest as will Kyle Lowry. Navarro is going to be a RFA but I would guess they will keep him.

Miami-what a mess. Maybe a sign and trade with Marion if he uses his ETO.

Milwaulkee-could they put Redd or Mo Williams on the block?

New Jersey-will they try and trade Carter?

New York-who knows what they are going to do? If I were them every player would be available.

Philly-haven't heard much recently but Iguodola wasn't happy with their 1st offer and that relationship could have gone bad. Miller could also be on the block but like I said before about guys with expiring deals if they are just looking for cap space why not just play it out?

Washington-Jamison will be a FA and Arenas has an ETO. do the Wiz want them back? do they want to go back?
