I agree with what Max said earlier in another thread
I like the idea of going after Elton Brand...Duke guy
I agree, I absolutely love the idea of Brand in Cleveland. Unfortunately, I just don't see it happening due to the structure of his contract -- after the season he has a player option for one more year. The Brand situation will shake out in one of three ways, none of which is conducive to a trade with the Cavs:
1) EB exercises his option
2) EB opts out, Clips sign-and-trade him
3) EB opts out, signs elsewhere as UFA
If EB exercises his option, then he becomes an expiring contract already. Therefore, it makes no sense for the Clippers to trade him for expiring contracts. If they trade Brand, they will be looking for young talent or nice draft picks in return. The value of our trade assets lies in fact that they're expiring contracts, so a trade here makes little sense. Andy is a young talent, but he's nothing more than an expiring contract to the Clippers, since AV is a lock to opt out and Sterling would never fulfill AV's contract demands. If we to trade for Brand, it'd likely cost us AV + Boobie + draft picks at the very least.
If EB opts out and the Clips want to sign-and-trade him, then once again, expiring contracts in return make no sense. Why go through the trouble of a sign-and-trade for expirings when you can just let him walk? I suppose that this scenario would give us slightly more leverage in trade talks than the previous scenario since EB has forced the Clips to trade him or lose him for no compensation. However, there will likely be much better trade offers out there for the Clips to choose from.
If EB opts out and signs elsewhere as a UFA, then we're shit outta luck since we're over the cap.
That being said, nothing is impossible. However, the only way we'd have a shot at landing EB (unless Brand demands a trade to Cleveland) would be to pay up big time. As good a fit as EB would be, it doesn't make sense from our perspective. Our primary objective is to maximize our trade assets, which requires finding trade partners who: a) have a piece that would benefit us, and b) would value expiring contracts more than this piece that benefits us. The situation with EB does not fit this mold. However, given Sterling's cheap ass, I would be interested in seeing if he would like to dump Kaman's contract, which goes for another 4 years and $43M after this season.
Perhaps there's a hole in my reasoning, but I honestly don't see how this happens. I'd love to hear from Max or a couple other guys who have been pimping EB if they have any ideas as to how this could work out in case I'm missing something.
