It’s Mustache Mania in Jacksonville with Nick Foles being traded to Chicago. Gardner Minshew is now the franchise guy in Jacksonville. With that being said, might l as well surround Minshew with as much talent as possible to give him the best chance to succeed and show (if) he can help take Jacksonville to the next level. If not, at least receiver won’t be a need for a couple of years. With Jacksonville ranking 26th in scoring (18.8 pts), 20th in total yards (341.8 yards), and 16th in passing (235 yards) last season, it makes sense to bring in more offensive fire power for the second year quarterback and new offensive coordinator.
Jerry Jeudy is the best router runner entering the league in recent memory. His quickness, ability to change gears, and fluid hips allow him to be an elite route runner. This truly allows him to be dynamic before and after the catch. Jeudy showed off his extensive route tree and IQ by constantly being on the same page as Tua when making reads on his routes. His route running will allow him to create separation and become a solid target that Minshew can trust. Between his 4.45 second 40 yard and his ‘twitchiness’ to make defenders miss, he is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the football. This speed also allows Jeudy to take the top off the defense with the deep ball.
In Jacksonville, Jeudy will be sharing targets with Pro Bowl WR, DJ Chark. Jeudy proved he can thrive in a dynamic offense playing alongside other top receivers at Alabama with Devonta Smith and Henry Ruggs III. He also showed the ability to thrive any where on the field in any offense. He played on the perimeter and in the slot. He also played in a vertical offense, showing he can be a deep threat (19.3 and 15.1 yards per reception in 2018 and 2019) and in the West Coast Offense on quick passes and especially slants, which is an offense that Jay Gruden (his new offensive coordinator) ran in Cincinnati.
Jeudy does have his issues, which is why some people have CeeDee Lamb and Henry Ruggs III rated as better prospects. His 191 pound frame could allow for bigger and more athletic corners to jam him at the line or push him off his routes. Jeudy does possess good press release moves, but he will need to add some muscle to truly combat this issue. Jeudy has shown effort in blocking and adding that muscle will help to make him a better blocker.
Jeudy had some mental lapses with drops and trying to use his frame to secure the catch; 7 drops in 2019. In 2018, he didn’t have these issues and actually made some tough catches over the course of the 2018 season. Jacksonville is leaning towards 2019 being a fluke and believe Minshew and Jeudy will develop great chemistry.
In 2018, he lead the SEC in receiving touchdowns with 14 (3rd in the NCAA), had 68 receptions (4th in SEC), 1315 receiving yards (10th in NCAA and 2nd in SEC), Consensus All-American, and won the Fred Biletnikoff award. He followed that up in 2019 with 77 receptions (3rd in the SEC), 1163 receiving yards (4th in the SEC), and 10 receiving touchdowns (5th in the SEC).
Overall, Jerry Jeudy is an elite prospect entering the league. At 6'1" he isn’t going to ever be a ‘jump ball’ receiver, but the combination of route running, speed, and ‘twitchiness’ will make him a threat to score every time he is on the field. If he proves that his bout with drops was just a fluke, Jeudy will be a top receiver for years to come. Jacksonville is a great landing spot for Jeudy as he will have a DJ Chark to help take away some of the ‘#1 attention’ he would see else where (Las Vegas, NY Jets, etc.) and allow him time to adjust to NFL speed. He will also be able to develop chemistry with second year quarterback Gardner Minshew.
