Possible Point Guards

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I have to wonder a little bit about Paxson coming out and making that comment. It could very well be true but he could also have tossed it out there to try and scare some teams off. I would think that Duhon could be available in a sign and trade because they are loaded at PG but they'd probably have to feel pretty good about a deal to trade with the Cavaliers.

My thinking is if we can sign Z and bring in a top SG (my preference for the offseason), it might be worth the gamble of offering what's left under the cap, I"m assuming about 3-4 mil to see if the Bulls will match.

I think this is a relatively weak list at PG. I like Dickau OK. If we don't see The answer here maybe we need to take a good look at the three spot and play Lebron as back up point. Better to spend the money on talent than on mediocre position. That is the beauty of Lebron.

was watching the best damn sports show period a few days ago... it had damon stoudamire on it. He said LeBron was his #1 person he would like to play with, followed closely by KG... Here's to hoping we could sign him cheaply, which doesn't seem too far fetched (age, track record, new PG's coming into the league might lessen his value).

personally i am not a big fan of Dickau, i think of the Hornets PG's i would rather have Claxton.

Keyon Dooling is interesting because i think there is still a lot of upsode with him, but do the Cavaliers have the time to put into a guy like that?

My favorite on the list is Daniels because they can use him at both guard spots, and he could provide some scoring punch off the bench.

i still like Watson and think he would be a good add to the wine & gold.

still wish the Cavaliers would have gone after Alston last offseason. there were a lot of people on that other board that were against him because he is a street baller, but i think he showed he can play the NBA game as well.

Re: Possible Point Guards - Jiri?

OK. This may sound crazy. But, if the Cavs sign Z and a high priced shooting guard, that doesn't leave much cap space to sign a top flight point guard. Personally, I'd rather hold on to Sasha than trade him for a pg. So, what about using Jiri as a backup to Snow?

I know he's not the fastest guy and that would give him trouble with some of the small, quick points. But, he does at least try to play good D. I think he could effectively guard guys such as Hinrich, Ridnour, ... Just don't put him on guys like Boykins or AI.

On the flip side, he could easily post up or shoot over almost any pg that would be guarding him. I expect that he will work hard on his game this summer and hopefully the new coach will help build the confidence back up. He's a pretty good ballhandler, he moves really well without the ball, and it would make for a very hard team to defend (no one under 6'6" on the floor).

Anyway, it's certainly not my first choice. But, since we already have him on the team, it might be worthwhile trying to get something positive out of Paxson's last boneheaded deal.

Re: Possible Point Guards - Jiri?

Thanks Zalgrinis from basketballboards.net for the info on Jasikevicius. He's the guy the Cavs have show interest in and more I've heard about the more I want him to be the Cavs PG. We last saw him lighting up the US olympic team. Maybe if Z gets reasonable on his contract demands, we can snag both Lithuanians

Im Lithuanian and I might be biased, but I think most of people here agree that Jasikevicius is best PG in Europe and one of best in the world. You saw him in Olympics, 2 years ago already NBA champion Tony Parker was owned in semifinal of Eurobasket2003 where Lithuania became champ later beating Pau Gasol and Spain in the final. In 2000 Sydney Olympics the last Dream Team was one shot away from loosing to Lithuania in the semifinal. Jasikevicius was the leader and Kidd with Payton at their best years couldnt do anything against Saras.

Jasikevicius has won 2 last Euroleague champs with Barcelona and Maccabi. This year with Maccabi he again made it to the Final Four. Hes an ultimate winner and fighter. He never gives up, he lights up his teammates, always plays with the passion. You can see fire in his eyes and energy around him when he plays.

Saras is a good shooter, has good dribling, but the best his skill of course is his passing - Nash style. His passes sometimes seem so unlogical, because you just didnt notice that this way of attack was possible, but after its done you see that it was really the best solution the player could find. Hes a great FT shooter also. Of course everybody questions his defense, but IMHO its more his attitude in defense. Yes, hes slow when defending, but if he cared more in defense he wouldnt be so exposed as it happens sometimes.

Anyway about his coming to NBA. I doubt Jasikevicius would agree with backup PG spot. At least he would have to be 6th player with 25-30 minutes. He just cant sit on bench, its against his nature. Also money should be bigger than in Europe, because hes one of best paid players here and he enjoys to play here. NBA isnt his dream anymore, so you must offer him good conditions (money and playing time wise) that he would agree to leave Europ

Update: Saras was the Euroleague Final Four MVP again this year

Jiri Welsch as our back up point guard is an interesting one OC Zip. Jiri knows his position in Cleveland is all but safe, so he needs to find a niche here to stay. Also the Cavalier's will not get a whole lot in return for Welsch, so utilising him off the bench behind Snow may be better then what we could get back from a trade. Jiri does have point skills, and whilst not being overly quick, he does hustle defensively. Hopefully a summer full of shooting drills he regains his shooting touch.

We have said that all our holes in our roster cannot be filled in one summer, so maybe the point spot is the one we dont fully cover. Snow, Jiri and a player on the minimum (like those 4 rooks we trialled at the Gund last week) maybe what we play with. Remember too, LeBron may play patches at the point as well.

If Jiri Welch is getting important minutes next year and he plays like he did this year the Cavs will be in big big trouble.

Following karma's graph on jiri welsh as the back up point, i think he may be right about us leaving the point guard position open for next year. We'd probably end up getting a point through a trade though by that senario. you have to have a point to reach your potential.

We do have many holes to fill, and the point spot may be position we have trouble to fill if we do sign a prominent 2 guard, and resign Z / sign and trade. If Jiri can find anything near what we was doing in Boston previous this year, then the Snow / Welsch point rotation will be ok. At least we will have some defense there, and players that are willing to share the ball. Remember to, that we are likely to use James at short stints here and there, so hat we can lineups of James/FA and Luke/Sasha/Newble. We do have some flexibilty in our lineup.

Get AV and track down Marcelo Huertas and find what he's up to. Let him try out with the team and if you like what you see, sign him.

They dont' even have him as being drafted. Has he declared?
